Mount Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Sacred Heart

New Britain, Conn. (May 7, 2016) – Sacred Heart held Mount St. Mary's University to just five hits combined in a Northeast Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday as the Pioneers posted victories of 7-1 and 8-1.

GAME ONE: Sacred Heart 7, Mount St. Mary's 1

Sacred Heart righty Jesus Medina held the Mount to two hits and one run as the Pioneers posted a 7-1 victory in the opening game of the doubleheader.

Sacred Heart jumped on top early, scoring five times in the first inning. Victor Sorrento roped a two-run triple to right field for the opening pair of Pioneer runs, and PJ DeFilippo and Jake Friar followed with RBI singles to stake Sacred Heart out to the early lead.

The Mountaineers scored an unearned run in the seventh as Mitch Sgrignoli touched the plate on an error by the third baseman, but Medina finished off his complete game effort to propel the Pioneers to the 7-1 victory.

GAME TWO: Sacred Heart 8, Mount St. Mary's 1

Sacred Heart scored seven times in the fifth inning and three Pioneers combined to hold the Mount to just three hits as they posted an 8-1 win to complete the doubleheader sweep.

The Mountaineers struck for the first run of the contest as Dalton Clouser knocked a two-out run-scoring single up the middle to plate Tyler Post in the top of the second frame, but an inning later, the Pioneers pulled even on an RBI double to left from Ted Shaw to knot the game at 1-1.

Sacred Heart broke the game open with a seven-run fifth inning, powered by a three-run double from Sorrento and two-run homer from Dan Schock, to take an 8-1 advantage. Mike Lembo closed it out with a scoreless seventh frame to wrap up the win for the Pioneers.

Brent Teller earned the victory, going five innings while allowing one run and striking out a pair.

UP NEXT: The Mount and Sacred Heart wrap up the four-game series on Sunday (May 8) at 1 p.m.
