Box Score New Britain, Conn. (May 6, 2016) – Mount St. Mary's University baseball dropped the opening game of its series at Sacred Heart by a 5-3 margin on Friday afternoon at New Britain Stadium. Senior outfielder Ryan Owens went 2-for-2 with a homer to lead the Mount.
After falling behind 3-0 early in the contest, the Mount came back with a pair of runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3. An RBI single to left by Vaughn Parker II got the Mount on the board, and Chris Wessels followed with a sac fly to score Patrick Causa as the Mount cut its deficit to one. Ryan Owens belted his second homer of the season in the following inning, a solo shot to left, to pull the Mount even, 3-3.
Sacred Heart regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth frame as Cody Doyle hit a sac fly to right that scored Jesus Medina and put the Pioneers in front, 4-3. The Pioneers added an insurance run in the eighth and shut down the Mount offense to go on for the 5-3 victory.
Both of Owens' hits went for extra bases as he added a double to go along with his home run. Zach Hostetter and Zach Call also registered doubles in the contest. Hunter Shuff got the start on the mound, tossing four innings with four strikeouts and two earned runs. Seth Schubert and Josh Little combined to throw four innings in relief, allowing just one earned run combined.
James Cooksey picked up the win for the Pioneers in one inning of scoreless ball, and Jeff Stoddard notched a three-inning save with a pair of strikeouts and just one hit allowed.
The second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to inclement weather. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 7, beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a single game on Sunday, May 8 at 1 p.m.
