Box Score 2 Emmitsburg, Md. (May 19, 2016) – Mount St. Mary's University baseball dropped its opening pair of games against Bryant on Thursday at E.T. Straw Family Stadium. The Bulldogs claimed a 6-0 victory in the opening tilt and registered an 8-0 win in game two to secure the doubleheader sweep.
GAME ONE: Bryant 6, Mount St. Mary's 0
The Bryant pitching staff held Mount St. Mary's to four hits as the Bulldogs took game one of the doubleheader, 6-0. James Karinchak registered 11 strikeouts in five shutout innings to collect the win, and Justin Snyder picked up the save with 1.2 innings of scoreless ball.
Mount starter Ben Smallenbroek, who went four innings and registered two strikeouts, held the Bulldogs off the board for the first two innings before Bryant struck for a pair in the top of the third on a Robby Rinn RBI groundout and sac fly from Brandon Bingel.
Zach Wood hit a two-run homer in the next inning to extend the Bulldogs' lead to 4-0, and Bryant added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth before Snyder closed out the 6-0 victory.
Josh Little allowed just one run in four innings of relief for the Mount, and Seth Schubert added a scoreless ninth frame as the Mount bullpen combined to allow just two runs in five innings of work.
Alex Kriss collected a multi-hit game with a single and a double, while Ryan Owens and Vaughn Parker II picked up a hit apiece for the Mount's other knocks in the contest.
GAME TWO: Bryant 8, Mount St. Mary's 0
Lefty Steve Theetge pitched a complete game shutout, going seven innings with five strikeouts and just three hits allowed to propel the Bulldogs to an 8-0 victory and complete the doubleheader sweep.
Bryant scored five runs in the opening three frames to jump out to the early lead behind four combined RBIs from Mickey Gasper and Zach Wood. The Bulldogs added three more in the fifth inning, and Theetge was able to shut down the Mountaineer offense to close out the 8-0 win.
UP NEXT: The Mount and Bryant will wrap up the four-game series with a doubleheader on Friday, May 20, with game one set for a 1 p.m. start. The Mountaineers will celebrate Senior Day prior to game one as they honor Austin Bonadio, Chad Diehl, Connor Graber, Kevin Myers, Ryan Owens, Tommy Quealy and Ben Smallenbroek.
