Box Score New Britain, Conn. (April 8, 2016) – Mount St. Mary's University dropped the series opener at Central Connecticut, 19-4, on Friday afternoon in Northeast Conference baseball action.
The Mount jumped out to the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Ryan Owens, who doubled to right center to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a groundout and later scored on an RBI single to right by Zach Hostetter.
Central Connecticut pulled even in the bottom of the second on an unearned, and added five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 6-1 advantage, with Nick Landell providing the big blow in the frame with a two-run single to left.
A nine-run sixth inning from the Blue Devils broke the game open as they widened their advantage to 15-1. Ryan Costello drilled a grand slam to right field to highlight the inning.
The Mount grabbed two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth, with Brendan Dabagian, Ryan Owens and Zach Call collecting RBIs, but Central Connecticut went on for the 19-4 victory.
Casey Brown picked up the win, going seven innings with four strikeouts while allowing three runs.
Owens, Call and Hostetter each registered two hits and one RBI apiece in the contest for the Mount.
The Mountaineers and Blue Devils are set for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9, with action starting at 1 p.m.
