Box Score Emmitsbug, Md. (April 3, 2016) – Freshman Hunter Shuff struck out nine in seven innings of work while allowing just one earned run to lead Mount St. Mary's University to a 5-3 victory over UMBC in the series finale on Sunday at Straw Family Stadium.
Shuff collected his first collegiate victory as his seven innings pitched and nine strikeouts were both career highs.
The Retrievers grabbed single runs in the third and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead, before the Mount broke out with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Tommy Quealy scored the team's first run on a throwing error by the catcher, and the Mount evened the game at 2-2 as Ryan Owens scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Zach Hostetter drilled an RBI double to left center to give the Mount the lead, and Patrick Causa followed with an RBI groundout to extend the advantage to 4-2.
Tyler Post drove in an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double to right center to score Alex Kriss, and Michael Kuypers pitched the final two innings to close it out for the Mount and collect his first career save.
The Mountaineers head to UMES for a single game on Wednesday, April 6 at 3 p.m.
