Box Score Staten Island, N.Y. (April 24, 2016) – After winning each of the first three games in its series at Wagner, Mount St. Mary's University was edged by the Seahawks, 9-8, in extra innings in the finale on Sunday to see its four-game winning streak come to an end.
With one out in the bottom half of the 10th inning for Wagner, Kyle Brey, Nick Mascelli and Trey Nicosia reached base to load them up. With Ben Ruta batting, Ben Smallenbroek uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Brey to score as the Seahawks walked off with the win.
Mount St. Mary's was trailing 8-6 in the ninth and down to its final strike when Patrick Causa tripled to left center to score Tyler Post and Michael Flyte and even the game at 8-8.
Causa went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, and Zach Hostetter tallied two hits while knocking in a pair of runs to lead the Mount's offense on the day. Zach Call (RBI double) and Chris Wessels (RBI single) drove in the team's other runs in the game.
Nicosia went 4-for-5 and Ruta went 3-for-5 as the duo combined for five RBIs in the win for Wagner. Nick Abbatiellio picked up the victory, tossing one inning of scoreless ball.
Hostetter gave the Mountaineers an early lead with a two-run single up the middle in the top of the first, but Wagner responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning and three in the second to take a 4-2 advantage. Ruta collected RBI singles in each of the first two innings, and Nicosia added a two-run double in the second.
The Seahawks notched three more runs in the middle innings to extend their lead to 7-2, before the Mount answered with three in the top of the sixth to trim the deficit. Wessels knocked an RBI single to start the rally and Causa and Hostetter later scored on an error for the other two runs in the frame.
The game was the second straight extra inning tilt for the two teams as Mount St. Mary's won in 12 innings in game two of the doubleheader on Saturday.
Mount St. Mary's is back in action on Friday, April 29 for game one against LIU Brooklyn in Emmitsburg at 3 p.m.
