Box Score Staten Island, N.Y. (April 22, 2016) – Mount St. Mary's University scored five times in the eighth and once in the ninth to come from behind and top Wagner, 6-5, in game one of the series on Friday at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. Alex Kriss' ninth-inning sac fly proved to be the game-winning run in the contest.
Trailing 4-0 heading into the top of the eighth, the Mount scored five times to open its first lead of the game. A bases loaded walk by Vaughn Parker II pushed the first Mount St. Mary's run across and brought Tyler Post to the plate with the bases still full of Mountaineers. Post delivered with a two-run single up the middle to trim the team's deficit to 4-3.
The Mountaineers scored the game-tying run on a double play with the bases loaded later in the inning, before taking a 5-4 lead on a Chris Wessels RBI single to score Post. Wagner responded in the bottom half of the frame as a run-scoring single by Sean Mazzio tied the game back up at 5-all.
Tommy Quealy led off the ninth inning with a double to left to put the Mount in business before advancing to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Kriss lifted a fly ball to center that scored Quealy and put the Mount on top, 6-5.
Michael Kuypers pitched a 1-2-3 ninth innings to shut the door as the Mount grabbed the one-run victory.
Hunter Shuff got the start for the Mount and went six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Shuff had a shutout going through the first four innings before yielding four runs in the fifth. Kuypers collected the victory with two innings of work, one earned run and one strikeout.
