Box Score 2 Baltimore, Md. (April 2, 2016) – UMBC grabbed victories in the opening pair of games of the home-and-home series with Mount St. Mary's University, topping the Mountaineers 9-3 in game one and 3-1 in game two of the non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
GAME ONE: UMBC 9, Mount St. Mary's 3
The Mount shutout the Retrievers in the opening two frames before UMBC broke out for a six-run third inning. Hunter Dolshun delivered a two-run double to highlight the inning, and Zach Bright capped it off with an RBI single to put UMBC out to a 6-0 advantage.
Mount St. Mary's got on the board in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout from Brendan Dabagian, but UMBC responded with a pair in the bottom half of the inning to extend its lead to 8-1.
First baseman Tyler Post launched a two-run homer to left in the fifth for his third home run of the season as he trimmed the Mount deficit to 8-3 with two innings to play. The Retrievers tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, and reliever Patrick Phillips closed out the game with no hits allowed in a pair of scoreless innings.
Riley Stephenson earned the win, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out four in five innings of work. Connor Graber took the loss, yielding seven runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings.
Dolshun went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs to lead the charge for UMBC. Patrick Causa (3-for-3) and Zach Hostetter (3-for-4) registered multi-hit games for the Mount.
GAME TWO: UMBC 3, Mount St. Mary's 1
Conrad Wozniak tossed seven innings of one-run ball while striking out six and allowing just three hits to lead UMBC to a 3-1 victory in the second game of the doubleheader.
Jamie Switalski drove in the Retrievers' first two runs with sacrifice flies in the third and fifth innings to stake UMBC out to a 2-0 advantage.
The Mount grabbed one run back in the top of the sixth on a two-out RBI double to center by Alex Kriss that scored Ryan Owens. UMBC answered in the bottom half of the inning as Kevin Lachance doubled to left center to drive in Connor Hax.
Wozniak threw a 1-2-3 top of the seventh to close out the 3-1 victory and secure the sweep of the doubleheader.
Chad Diehl took the loss for the Mount despite allowing just two runs in 4.1 innings of work.
