Box Score Asheville, N.C. (March 6, 2016) – Lefty Chad Diehl allowed just one earned run in five strong innings to lead Mount St. Mary's baseball to a 2-1 win at UNC Asheville despite the Mountaineers getting no-hit in the contest.
Diehl struck out four in five innings on the mound to collect the victory as he improved to 1-1 on the year. Michael Kuypers followed Diehl with 2.1 scoreless innings, and Jordan Lawson closed out the victory with 1.2 scoreless.
Jordan Carr and Eric Whitecavage combined to no-hit the Mount, but surrendered a pair of unearned runs in the game.
Pete Guy got UNC Asheville on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to score Danny Wilson, but the Mountaineers answered with a pair of unearned runs in the top half of the fifth. Zach Hostetter reached on an error by the third baseman, and Patrick Causa followed with a walk to put the Mount in business with two-on and no-out.
With Tyler Post at-bat, Hostetter and Causa pulled off a double-steal to put runners at second and third. Post then grounded out to shortstop to knock in Hostetter and move Causa to third while evening the game at 1-1. With Joshua Lenig batting, Causa touched home on a passed ball to give the Mountaineers a 2-1 advantage.
The Mount held Asheville off the board in the final five innings, and Lawson got Wilson to fly out for the final out of the game as the Mountaineers escaped with a 2-1 victory.
