Box Score Winston-Salem, N.C. (March 2, 2016) – Mount St. Mary's University baseball was unable to overcome an early deficit, falling at Wake Forest on Wednesday night by a final of 8-2. Outfielder Ryan Owens and first baseman Tyler Post registered RBI to lead the Mount offense.
Wake Forest struck early in the contest, plating three runs in each of the first two innings and single runs in the third and fourth. Ben Breazeale knocked in a pair of runs in the first two innings to lead the charge.
The Mount answered in the top of the second inning as Post hit an RBI double to right-center to drive in Zach Hostetter.
With the Demon Deacons leading 8-1 heading into the top of the seventh, the Mountaineers cut their deficit to six as Owens doubled down the right field line to knock in Brendan Dabagian.
The Mount's relievers allowed just two earned runs and struck out six in 6.2 innings of work, but Wake Forest held the Mountaineers off the board in the final two innings to earn the 8-2 victory.
Christian Batholomew registered the win, going 3.0 innings and allowing just one earned run on four hits. Ben Smallenbroek took the loss for the Mount, yielding six earned runs in 1.1 innings of work.
The Mountaineers head to UNC Asheville for a three-game series spanning March 4-6.
