Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (March 16, 2016) – Mount St. Mary's University put up its highest run total of the season, but was clipped by Coppin State, 12-9, on Wednesday at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.
Freshman Pat Daly led the offensive surge, going 3-for-5 with a home run, double and a team-high three RBI, while Ryan Owens and Alex Kriss each added two hits apiece and combined for three RBI in the contest.
Bryant Miranda of Coppin State went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI, and George Dragon and Andrew O'Dwyer chipped in with two RBI each.
The Mountaineers struck in the bottom of the first on Daly's first career homer, but Coppin St. responded with two runs in the second, two in the third and four in the top of the fourth to take an 8-2 advantage.
The Mount answered the Eagles' four-run fourth inning with four of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Daly led off with a double to left-center and Tyler Post followed with a walk to put two runners on with no outs. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Daly scored on a sac fly by Patrick Causa for the first run of the inning. Later in the frame with the bases loaded, Owens singled to center to score a pair and advance Tommy Quealy to third. Quealy later scored on a wild pitch to close the gap to 8-6.
The Eagles outscored the Mount 3-1 in the next four frames, and added one more in the top of the ninth to head into the final half inning with a 12-7 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, the first three Mountaineers reached base to bring Daly to the dish with the bases loaded and nobody out. Daly grounded out to first to push one run across and cut the deficit to four, before Tyler Post followed with an RBI groundout to close the gap to 12-9. Krystian Negron was able to get the final out of the game, striking out Patrick Causa, to close out the victory.
The Mount opens conference play with a four-game series at Fairleigh Dickinson, with the opening game set for Friday, March 18 at 3 p.m.
