Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (February 11, 2016)--Junior Robinson (Mebane, N.C.) scored a career-high 26 points to lead Mount St. Mary's past Sacred Heart, 66-61, on Thursday night at Knott Arena. Robinson's traditional three-point play with 53.8 seconds left gave the Mount the lead for good.
Sacred Heart's Tevin Falzon hit a pair of free throws with 1:02 on the clock to cap a 7-0 run that gave the Pioneers a 61-59 lead. On the ensuing possession, Robinson scored on a drive to the basket. The 5-5 sophomore guard was fouled on the play, and he hit the free throw to give the Mount a 62-61 lead with 53.8 seconds remaining.
The Mount then got the key stop on the defensive end on the next possession. Chris Wray (Shelby, N.C.) tipped the ball away from Sacred Heart leading scorer Cane Broome, who was then forced to throw up a desperation heave from 35-feet away as the shot clock was about to expire. The ball did not hit the rim, and the Mount gained possession. Robinson was fouled on the inbounds pass, and he both shots to push the lead to 64-61.
Sacred Heart's Falzon missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with seven seconds left, and BK Ashe (Washington, D.C.) sealed the win for the Mount (11-15, 8-5 NEC) with two free throws.
Robinson hit 9-of-18 from the field and was 6-for-6 at the foul line en route to his career-best 26 points. It is the second time in the past three games he has scored 20 or more points, and he is averaging 20.0 points over the past three games. Wray added a career highs of 17 points and nine rebounds for the Mountaineers in the win. Wray had six offensive rebounds in the victory. Ashe added 15 points while Gregory Graves (Sterling, Va.) tallied eight points and five rebounds.
Broome led Sacred Heart (8-16, 7-6 NEC) with 20 points while Jordan Allen and Quincy McKnight chipped in 12 points each in the loss.
Trailing 35-31 at the half, the Mount opened the second stanza with a 14-to-6 run to take a 45-41 advantage. That run was capped by a long Robinson three-pointer as the shot clock was about to expire with 12:24 remaining in the game.
Sacred Heart responded, taking a 52-49 lead on a Sean Hoehn three-pointer with just under nine minutes left. Robinson then converted traditional three-point plays on consecutive possessions to give the Mount a 55-52 lead. After a Sacred Heart jumper, Wray scored a lay-up off a steal and Graves hit a jumper to give the Mount a 59-54 lead with 5:00 left.
Mount St. Mary's shot 37.9 percent (25-of-66) from the field in the game, but forced Sacred Heart into 21 turnovers. The Pioneers shot 47.9 percent (23-of-48).
The Mount returns to action on Saturday, February 13, with a 3:00 p.m. home game against Saint Francis U.
