Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (August 28, 2015)--The Mount St. Mary's University women's soccer team was stunned by a pair of late goals in a 2-1 loss to American at Waldron Family Stadium on Friday night. Freshman Nikki Pinto (West Deptford, N.J.) scored her first collegiate goal for the Mountaineers in the loss.
Pinto's first career goal broke a scoreless tie to give the Mount the lead with just over 15 minutes left in the game. Fellow freshman Jenna West (Manheim, Pa.) sent a beautiful long ball through the middle with Pinto able to corral the pass just inside the penalty area. Pinto then converted the shot to the lower right hand corner of the goal.
The Eagles (1-2) rallied with a pair of late goals in a span of 41 seconds to stun the Mountaineers. American's Yari Bradfield collected a deflected ball in the middle of the penalty box, and scored into a wide-open net to even the score with 4:21 left in regulation.
American then took the lead just 41 seconds later when Kelly Donovan collected the ball in the box and tapped the ball past Mount redshirt freshman goalkeeper Quinn Costello-Mays (Woodbridge, Va.) for the game-winning goal.
The Mount (0-3) had a pair of scoring chances early in the second half. Freshman Shayna Macfarlane (Hummelstown, Pa.) ripped a shot from 25 yards out that was denied by American's Courtney Bembenek just over a minute into the half. The Mount's Kirsten O'Malley (Montoursville, Pa.) had a solid scoring chance six minutes later, but was stopped by Bembenek as well.
Costello-Mays was solid her in collegiate debut for the Mount, finishing the contest with six saves. Bembenek had three saves for American, which held a 21-to-5 edge in shots, including an 8-to-4 advantage in shots on goal.
The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday, August 30, with a 1:00 p.m. home game against High Point.
