Box Score 2 Emmitsburg, Md. (May 2, 2015)--Andrew Clow (Bel Air, Md.) hit a walk-off home run while Jordan Lawson (Harrisburg, Pa.) picked up a pair of wins as Mount St. Mary's swept a doubleheader against Northeast Conference leader Wagner at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
GAME 1: Mount St. Mary's 6, Wagner 5 (8 innings)
Clow led off the bottom of the eighth with a home run that just cleared the right field fence to lift the Mount to a 6-5 win in the opening game of the doubleheader.
The Mount (11-26, 9-10 NEC) scored five times in the bottom of the third to take a 5-0 lead. With one out, Brendan Dabagian (Media, Pa.) was hit by a pitch, and Tommy Quealy (Pittsburgh, Pa.) followed by flaring a single to right field. Ryan Owens (Burke, Va.) drove in both runners with a double to right-center field to put the Mount in front, 2-0. Clow advanced Owens to third with a groundout, and Kory Britton (Columbia, Md.) singled up the middle to plate Owens. Zach Hostetter (Lebanona, Pa.) then crushed a two-run homer to left to give the Mountaineers a five-run advantage.
Wagner answered back with three runs in the top of the fourth to get back into the game. Trey Nicosia singled to left to start the rally, and Nick Mascelli then reached on a Mount error to put runners on first and second. Ben Ruta followed with a base hit to load the bases, and Nick Dini's sacrifice fly put the Seahawks on the scoreboard. After a flyout, Anthony Godino doubled just inside the third base bag to make it 5-2, and Wagner's final run of the inning came on a Mount error.
The Seahawks connected for a pair of runs in the fifth to even the score. Dan Wasilick doubled to open the frame, and he moved to third after a pair of flyouts. Lawson came on in relief of Mount starter Chris Campbell (Centerville, Va.) to face Ruta, plated Wasilick with an infield hit to make it a 5-4 game. A Mount error put runners on first and second for Tommy Mazurkiewicz, who then singled to left to score Ruta with the tying run. Nick Dini, however, was gunned down at the plate by Hostetter to end the inning.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when Clow greeted reliever Steven Bloodworth with the game-winning homer.
Campbll allowed four runs (one earned) with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Lawson picked up the win, allowing an unearned run with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings of relief.
Ruta and Nicosia each had two hits for Wagner. Starter Mike Adams allowed five runs in four innings while Nick Pavia tossed three innings of scoreless relief. Bloodworth took the loss.
GAME 2: Mount St. Mary's 8, Wagner 6
Mount St. Mary's scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 5-5 tie and earn the win in game two. Hostetter drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth with an infield single with the bases loaded.
Wagner struck first in game two, scoring five times in the top of the third to take the lead. Sean Mazzio scored on a wild pitch to open the scoring while Dini added an RBI single to center to make it 2-0. Nick Mascelli added a run when he scored on a wild pitch, and Mazurkiewicz hit a two-run single down the left field line to push the Wagner advantage to 5-0. Nick DeCarlo (Montgomery Village, Md.) came on in relief and got a groundout and a double-play to end the inning.
Mount St. Mary's fought back by scoring five times in the bottom of the fourth to even the score. Hostetter doubled to open the inning, and Brian Parreira (Annapolis, Md.) followed with a long home run to right to cut the deficit to 5-2. Joshua Lenig (Dumfries, Va.) walked and Dabagian was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a strikeout, Owens singled just over the first baseman's head to score Lenig, cutting the Wagner lead to 5-3. Clow laced a single to left to cut the deficit to one, and Owens scored the tying run when he scampered home when a Britton reached on an error by the first baseman.
DeCarlo held Wagner off the scoreboard with a pair of scoreless innings, while Lawson came in the game in the top of the sixth and retired the side in order. The Mount rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to grab the lead.
Owens worked a one-out walk, and Clow followed with a base hit to right. Owens advanced to third on the hit, and Clow was able to move up when the right fielder's throw to third got away. Britton was intentionally walked, and Wagner summoned Bloodworth to face Hostetter with the bases loaded. Hostetter came through with an RBI infield single to the hole at short to put the Mount ahead, 6-5. The Mount added a pair of insurance runs on wild pitches to stretch the lead to 8-5.
Mazzio led off the seventh with a double for Wagner, and he came around to score on a pair of groundouts. Lawson then retired Ruta on a grounder to end the game.
Hostetter went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles to lead the Mount offense in game two. Owens was 2-for-2 with a two of runs scored while Clow went 2-for-4 in the win.
Scott Nickerson (Annapolis, Md.) started, allowing five runs in two-plus innings of work. DeCarlo did a nice job out of the bullpen, not allowing a hit in three scoreless innings. Lawson earned his second win of the day, allowing one run in two innings of relief.
Mazzio went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Wagner in game two. Matt Morris started, allowing five runs (four earned) with six strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Goeke took the loss, allowing three runs in 1.2 innings.
The teams complete the four-game series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus.
