Box Score 2 Teaneck, N.J. (May 16, 2015)—The Mount St. Mary's baseball team split its doubleheader at Fairleigh Dickinson today, setting up a winner-take-all showdown tomorrow for the final Northeast Conference playoff spot. The Mount captured the first game, 4-1, before Fairleigh Dickinson earned a 4-2 win in the nightcap.
GAME ONE: Mount St. Mary's 4, Fairleigh Dickinson 1
Chris Campbell pitched 6.1 strong innings to lead the Mount to a 4-1 win in the opening game of the doubleheader. Kory Britton added a 2-for-3 day with an RBI to pace the Mount offense in the victory.
Andrew Clow tripled in the top of the first inning, and came home on a Britton base hit to give the Mount the early 1-0 advantage.
The Mountaineers (12-30, 10-13 NEC) added a pair of runs in the top of the second when Brian Parreira and Brendan Dabagian walked ahead of a Tommy Quealy base hit that loaded the bases. Ryan Owens followed with a base hit to right to plate Parreira. Clow added an RBI fielder's choice to push the lead to 3-0.
John Giakas homered for FDU (19-24, 10-13 NEC) in the bottom of the second to make it 3-1, but the Mount responded in the top of the third on a Parreira home run to right.
From there, Campbell was able to keep FDU at bay. Jordan Lawson came on with one out in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game.
Campbell struck out four while allowing six hits in 6.1 innings to improve to 4-1 on the season. Lawson converted his fifth save of the year to move the Mount within one win of the NEC playoffs.
GAME TWO: Fairleigh Dickinson 4, Mount St. Mary's 2
The Mountaineers got off to a quick start in game two with Owens belting a solo home run to lead off the game. Fairleigh Dickinson answered in the bottom of the frame when Matt McCann and Dylan Sprague singled, and Riley Moonan brought home McCann with a sacrifice fly.
Mount St. Mary's regained the lead in the top of the third. Quealy singled to open the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a Clow single to center field.
FDU took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. Shane Siebler and McCann singled and the Knights loaded the bases on an error on a Sprague bunt. Moonan cleared the bases with a double down the right field line to give the Knights a 4-2 advantage.
Mount starter Nick DeCarlo allowed four runs (three earned) in three innings of work. Kevin Myers tossed three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits.
Ryan McGrath tossed a complete game for Fairleigh Dickinson to earn the win. McCann was 2-for-2 with two runs scored while Moonan drove in all four runs in the game.
The teams conclude the four-game series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
