Big Inning Dooms Mount St. Mary's Baseball in Loss to Wagner in Series Opener

Box Score

Emmitsburg, Md. (May 1, 2015)--A five-run seventh inning doomed the Mount St. Mary's baseball team in a 7-2 loss to first-place Wagner at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus on Friday afternoon.  Andrew Clow (Bel Air, Md.) had a pair of hits to pace the Mount in the loss.

Wagner (22-15-1, 10-3 NEC) scored five times in the top of the seventh to snap a 2-2 tie and earn the win.  Trey Nicosia doubled to open the inning and Nick Mascelli followed with a base hit to put runners on the corners with no outs.  Ben Ruta then drove a ball to the right-center field gap to plate both runners to give the Seahawks a 4-2 lead.  Nick Dini followed with a base hit up the middle to push the advantage to three.  Wagner loaded the bases, and added the final two runs on RBI groundouts to second base for the 7-2 advantage.

The Seahawks scored first with a single run in the top of the second.  Dini singled and Tommy Mazurkiewicz walked to open the frame.  Anthony Godino followed with a grounder to the hole at shortstop.  Mount shortstop Kory Britton's (Columbia, Md.) only play was to try for the force at third, but Dini was able to beat the throw to load the bases.  Zack Yesko then reached on a fielder's choice to force home Dini with the first run.  Mount starter Thomas Williams (Bowie, Md.) was able to avoid further damage by getting an inning-ending double play.

The Mountaineers (9-26, 7-10 NEC) grabbed the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third.  Brendan Dabagian (Media, Pa.) walked to leadoff the inning, and he moved to second on a groundout.  After Ryan Owens (Burke, Va.) was retired on a fly out to right, Clow rapped a single to center to even the score at 1-1.  Britton then laced a ball off the fence in right-center for an RBI double to put the Mount ahead.

Wagner evened the score in the top of the sixth.  Godino singled up the middle, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and the scored when Mazzio singled down the left field line to tie the game at 2-2.

Williams had a solid start for the Mountaineers, matching a season-high with six strikeouts while allowing a pair of runs in six innings of work.  Ben Smallenbroek (Davidsonville, Md.) took the loss in relief while Michael Collins (Mercersburg, Pa.) tossed three innings of scoreless relief.

Clow went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Brtton and Brian Parreira (Annapolis, Md.) had the Mount's other hits in the game.

Nolan Long struck out nine while allowing two runs in seven innings to pick up the win for Wagner.  The Seahawks had 13 hits in the game, with Dini going 3-for-5 with a pair of runs to lead the way.

The series continues with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow.  It is #AtBat4Autism Day at Straw Family Stadium in support of Autism Awareness.  The Mount baseball team has dedicated its season to Autism Awareness, and will present a check for donations taken at home games this year to the Arc of Frederick County between games of the twinbill.
