Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (April 3, 2015)--Mount St. Mary's defeated Central Connecticut State, 5-1, in Northeast Conference action at Straw Family Stadium on Friday afternoon. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed until tomorrow afternoon.
Jordan Lawson (Camp Hill, Pa.) tossed four innings of scoreless relief to earn the win while the Mount offense used timely hitting to earn the victory.
CCSU (7-12, 1-2 NEC) opened the game with a leadoff home run by Franklin Jennings before the Mount answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead. Tyler Post (Brookville, Md.) laced a one-out double to right center field to start the rally. Zach Call (Calvert, Md.) followed with a base hit up the middle to plate Post to knot the score at 1-1. Brendan Dabagian (Media, Pa.) singled to center to put runners on first and second with one out. The Mount then took advantage of a CCSU error on a grounder to first that allowed Call to score the go-ahead run. Ryan Owens (Burke, Va.) lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Mountaineers a 3-1 lead.
The Blue Devils were unable to score in the top of the fourth despite loading the bases with no outs. Back-to-back singles from Ryan Costello and Connor Fitzsimons started the frame. The Mount's Lawson came on in relief, and Dean Lockery reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. The next batter grounded to Mount first baseman Brian Parreira (Annapolis, Md.) who got the force out at the plate for the first out of the inning. Lawson then got out of the jam when Kory Britton (Columbia, Md.) turned a 6-3 double-play to end the inning.
The Mount (4-15, 2-1 NEC) added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Owens singled to open the inning, and came around to score when Clow ripped a double down the left field line. Clow moved to third on a Zach Hostetter (Lebanon, Pa.) base hit, and he scored on a Parreira sacrifice fly to stretch the advantage to 5-1.
Lawson was in control on the mound for the Mount, retiring 12 in a row after allowing the bunt single to the first batter he faced. Lawson finished the game with four strikeouts and one hit allowed in four innings pitched. Mount starter Chris Campbell (Centreville, Va.) allowed one run and six hits in three innings. Clow, Call and Owens each went 2-for-3 in the win.
