Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (April 26, 2015)--Zach Hostetter's (Lebanon, Pa.) two-out RBI single to center field lifted Mount St. Mary's to a 4-3 walk-off win over Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium. The Mountaineers won three of four games in the Northeast Conference series.
With the score tied at 3-3 heading to the bottom of the ninth, Tommy Quealy (Pittsburgh, Pa.) worked a walk off reliever John Sostarich to open the inning. Quealy advanced to second on a Ryan Owens (Burke, Va.) sacrifice bunt, and the Sacred Heart chose to intentionally walk Andrew Clow (Bel Air, Md.) to put runners on first and second.
Sostarich was able to get Kory Britton (Columbia, Md.) to fly out to left for the second out of the inning, setting up Hostetter for the game-winning hit. Hostetter lined a single to center field to plate Quealy with the winning run.
The Mount (9-25, 7-9 NEC) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of teh third. Clow was hit by a pitch and Britton walked to put runners on first and second with two outs. Hostetter followed with a single to left-center field to score Clow with the first run of the game.
The Pioneers (14-22-1, 7-5 NEC) scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to take the lead. In the fourth, Victor Sorrento provided a two-out RBI base hit to plate Jayson Sullivan, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. In the fifth, Jesus Medina singled with one out, moved to second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch, and came home on a Sullivan sacrifice fly to right.
Mount St. Mary's evened the score with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Brian Parreira (Annapolis, Md.) singled up the middle and moved to second when Tyler Post (Brookeville, Md.) grounded out to short. With two outs, Joshua Lenig (Dumfries, Va.) singled to right field to even the score at 2-2.
Sacred Heart took the lead in the top of the eighth. Medina walked to open the frame, and he moved to second on a Sullivan sacrifice bunt. Sorrento then came through with a two-out single to left to score Medina with the go-ahead run.
The Mountaineers answered right back with a run in the bottom of the eighth to even the score. Parreira singled to center to open the inning, and he moved to second on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Brendan Dabagian (Media, Pa.) singled up the middle to score Parreira to tie the game at 3-3.
Chad Diehl (Westminster, Md.) had a strong start for the Mount, allowing two runs (one earned) and just three hits in 6.1 innings. Jordan Lawson (Harrisburg, Pa.) picked up the win, allowing one run in 2.2 innings of relief. Lawson went 1-0 with a pair of saves in six innings in the four-game series.
Hostetter went 2-for-5 with two RBI while Parreira was 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the win. Owens and Lenig each went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Mount.
Sorrento went 2-for-4 with two RBI for Sacred Heart. Matt Cooney allowed two runs in five innings. Sostarich took the loss, allowing one run in two-thirds of an inning.
The Mount is back in action next weekend with a four-game series against NEC leader Wagner. The first game will be on Friday, May 1, at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus.
GAME NOTES: The Mount has won three of four games against Sacred Heart in each of the past two seasons...In both years, the Mount dropped the opening game before winning the final three...Owens went 8-for-14 (.571) out of the lead-off spot for the Mount in the series.
