(April 25, 2015)—The Mount St. Mary's baseball team used a pair of one-run victories to sweep visiting Sacred Heart in a Northeast Conference doubleheader on Saturday at E.T. Straw Family Stadium. Ryan Owens (Burke, Va.) had four hits on the day while Jordan Lawson (Harrisburg, Pa.) earned a save in each game to lead the way.
GAME 1: Mount St. Mary's 3, Sacred Heart 2
Chris Campbell (Centerville, Va.) pitched five-plus strong innings while Zach Hostetter (Lebanon, Pa.) belted a solo home run to lead the Mount to a 3-2 win in the opening game of the doubleheader. Lawson sealed the win with a two-inning save for the Mountaineers.
The Mount (8-25, 6-9 NEC) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead. Brendan Dabagian (Media, Pa.) singled with one out and moved to second on a Mitch Sgrignoli (Middletown, Md.) sacrifice bunt. Tommy Quealy (Pittsburgh, Pa.) followed with a clutch two-out single to right-center to give the Mount a 1-0 lead. Owen then laced a double to left to score Quealy to give the Mountaineers a two-run advantage.
Sacred Heart's Dan Schock belted a solo home run in the top of the third to cut the Mount's lead to 2-1, but Hostetter countered with a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth to push the Mount's lead back to two.
Victor Sorrento led off the top of the sixth with a double for Sacred Heart to end Campbell's day. Lawson came on in relief, and was greeted by a Ted Shaw RBI double that made it a 3-2 game. Lawson then got the first out on a strikeout, but the next batter reached on a single when his pop fly was lost in the sun. A second Lawson strikeout in the inning made it two outs, but Jesus Medina singled to load the bases for the Pioneers. Lawson buckled down to get Jayson Sullivan, Sacred Heart's top hitter, to fly out to right to end the inning.
Lawson worked around a two-out single in the seventh to earn the two-inning save.
Owens and Hostetter each went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Mount in the victory. Campbell allowed two runs and six hits in five-plus innings of work to earn the win. He struck out four while improving to 3-1 with a 2.41 ERA on the year. Lawson had a pair of strikeouts in his two innings of work to earn his third save of the year.
GAME 2: Mount St. Mary's 5, Sacred Heart 4
Mount St. Mary's scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to earn a 5-4 victory in the second game of the doubleheader. Starting pitcher Kevin Myers (LaVale, Md.) earned the win, allowing four runs (two earned) in 5.2 innings. Lawson picked up his second save of the day with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
The Pioneers (14-21-1, 7-4 NEC) scored two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Sullivan reached on an error with one out, and Zack Short followed with an RBI double to right-center field to plate the game's first run. Anthony Capozziello's RBI single made the score 2-0.
The Mountaineers took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the secondinning. Jay Knight (Frederick, Md.) coaxed a one-out walk, and Brian Parreira (Annapolis, Md.) followed by lacing a double to the fence in right center to put runners on second and third. After a strikeout, Sgrignoli and Quealy recorded back-to-back walks, with Quealy's free pass forcing home Knight for the Mount's first run. Owens then reached on an infield hit to third base, and an errant throw on the play allowed Sgrignoli to score the go-ahead run.
The Pioneers evened the score in the third on a Capoziello RBI fielder's choice. Sacred Heart took advantage of a Mount miscue in the top of the fifth to grab a 4-3 lead.
Mount St. Mary's rallied in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. Owens opened the inning with a bunt single, moving to second when Medina's throw was wild. Andrew Clow (Bel Air, Md.) followed with base hit to left, and Kory Britton (Columbia, Md.) was walked to load the base with no outs.
Dan Wertz came on in relief for the Pioneers to face Hostetter with the bases loaded. Hostetter chopped a high bouncer that Wertz had to grab behind the mound, and his throw trying to get the force at the plate was late, and the Mount was able to even the score. Knight then grounded into a 6-3 double-play with Clow scoring the go-ahead run.
Sacred Heart threatened in the top of the sixth when Jake Friar reached on an error with two outs. With Lawson on in relief, Friar stole second, and advanced all the way to third when Lawson's pitch went to the backstop. Schock followed with a walk to put runners on the corners, but Lawson ended the threat with a strikeout.
Sullivan doubled to lead off the seventh for Sacred Heart, but Lawson was able to retired the next three batters to earn his fourth save of the year.
Owens went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI to lead the Mount offense in the game. Short went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored for Sacred Heart.
Myers picked up his first win of the year, allowing four runs (two earned) in 5.2 innings of work. Lawson had a pair of strikeouts in his 1.1 innings of relief.
The teams complete the four-game set with a 1:00 p.m. matchup tomorrow.
