Mount St. Mary's Baseball Sees Early Lead Slip Away in Loss at Bryant

Box Score

Smithfield, R.I. (April 19, 2015)--Mount St. Mary's scored six times in the first inning, but was unable to hold the lead in a 14-9 loss at Bryant on Sunday afternoon.  Kory Britton (Columbia, Md.) and Zach Hostetter (Lebanon, Pa.) each had three hits for the Mountaineers in the game.

The Mount (6-24, 4-8 NEC) scored six runs in the top of the first to take a 6-0 lead.  Ryan Owens (Burke, Va.) walked and Andrew Clow (Bel Air, Md.) singled to put runners on first and second.  Britton followed with an RBI single to put the Mountaineers on the scoreboard.  Hostetter followed with a base hit through the left side to plate the second run.  The Mount loaded the bases, and Brendan Dabagian (Media, Pa.) and Tommy Quealy (Pittsburgh, Pa.) each walked to force home a run to push the advantage to 4-0.  Owens then added a two-run single to give the Mount the six-run cushion.

Bryant (14-16, 6-2 NEC) scored a run in the bottom of the first, and then added four more in the second to cut the deficit to 6-5.  The Bulldogs evened the score in the fourth on a Robby Rinn RBI single, and then scored a pair of unearned runs to grab an 8-6 lead in the fifth.

After Bryant scored twice in the sixth to take a 10-6 lead, the Mount got a run back in the top of the seventh.  Clow and Britton had back-to-back one-out singles ahead of Hostetter, who knocked in Clow with a base hit up the middle.  Bryant countered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 14-7.

The Mount scored twice in the ninth to round out the scoring.  With one out, Britton singled and Hostetter doubled to put runners on second and third.  Brian Parreira (Annapolis, Md.) singled to plate Britton, and Joshua Lenig (Dumfries, Va.) hit a sacrifice fly to round out the scoring.

Hostetter went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI while Britton was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored in the loss.  Britton went 9-for12 (.750) at the plate in the final three games of the series.  Clow added a 2-for-5 day with two runs while Owens went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Chad Diehl (Westminster, Md.) started for the Mount, allowing five runs (four earned) in two innings.  Jordan Lawson (Camp Hill, Pa.) took the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) in 2.1 innings of relief.

Buck McCarthy and Matt Albanese each had three hits for Bryant while Justin Snyder earned the win on the mound, allowing one run in 5.2 innings of relief.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action next weekend with a four-game NEC home series against Sacred Heart.  The first game is a 3:00 p.m. matchup on Friday, April 24, at Straw Family Stadium on campus.
