Box Score 2 Smithfield, R.I. (April 18, 2015)—The Mount St. Mary's University baseball team dropped both ends of a Northeast Conference twinbill at Bryant on Saturday afternoon. Bryant rallied from a six-run deficit to take the first game, 10-9, in eight innings before downing the Mount, 6-1, in game two.
GM 1: Bryant 10, Mount St. Mary's 9 (8 inn.)
Bryant rallied from an 8-2 sixth-inning deficit to earn a 9-8 extra-inning victory in the opening game of the doubleheader. Kory Britton (Columbia, Md.) went 4-for-4 for the Mountaineers in the game.
Mount St. Mary's (6-23, 4-7 NEC) struck for four runs in the top of the first inning to grab the lead. Ryan Owens (Burke, Va.) walked, stole second, and moved to third on a Britton base hit. After Britton stole second, Zach Hostetter (Lebanon, Pa.) doubled to right-center field to put the Mount ahead 2-0. Brian Parreira (Annapolis, Md.) followed with a two-run homer to right field to give the Mount the four-run advantage.
The Bulldogs sliced the lead in half on a Robby Rinn two-run homer in the fourth, but the Mount answered with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take an 8-2 advantage.
Hostetter laced an RBI single in the fifth to give the Mount a 5-2 lead. In the sixth, Brendan Dabagian (Media, Pa.) singled and moved to second on a throwing error to start the rally. Tommy Quealy (Pittsburgh, Pa.) walked and Owens was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Clow followed with a two-run double to left-center to push the lead to five. Hostetter's fourth run RBI in the game, a run-producing single, gave the Mount an 8-2 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth.
Bryant (13-16, 5-2 NEC) rallied with four runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the Mount lead to two. A Quealy two-run RBI single in the top of the seventh gave the Mount a 9-6 lead, but Bryant scored three times in the bottom of the inning to even the score.
After loading the bases, A.J. Zarozny's two-run single up the middle made it a 9-8 ballgame. A walk loaded the bases again, but Mount reliever Nick DeCarlo (Montgomery Village, Md.) got a strikeout for the second out of the inning. Bryant, however, evened the score on a Mount fielding error to force extra innings.
John Mullen's RBI double in the bottom of the eighth gave Bryant a walk-off win.
Britton went 4-for-4 with a run scored while Hostetter went 3-for-4 with four RBIs for the Mount in the loss. Dabagian added a pair of hits while Owens scored two runs in the game.
On the mound, starter Chris Campbell (Centerville, Va.) allowed two runs with a pair of strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
Rinn went 3-for-3 with three runs scored while Matt Albanese went 3-for-4 with four runs scored for Bryant in the win.
GM 2: Bryant 6, Mount St. Mary's 1
Bryant earned the sweep in the doubleheader with a 6-1 victory in game two. Britton provided the Mount offense with a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning.
The Bulldogs scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second off Mount starter Kevin Myers (LaVale, Md.) to take a 2-0 advantage.
Britton's solo home run to right in the top of the fourth cut the deficit to 2-1, but Bryant two runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth to push the lead to 6-1.
The Mount threatened in the sixth when Clow and Britton had back-to-back one-out singles in the top of the sixth to put runners on first and second. Bryant starter James Karinchak, however, got a double play to end the threat.
Britton went 2-for-3 for the Mount in game two, and was 6-for-7 in the doubleheader. Myers allowed four runs (three earned) in 3.1 innings for the Mount.
The teams conclude the four-game series tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
