MOUNT UPDATE: The Mountaineers split its four-game Northeast Conference series at LIU Brooklyn over the weekend. After dropping the opening two games of the series, the Mount rebounded with a 2-1 win in the second game of Saturday's twinbill, and a 12-2 victory on Sunday. Andrew Clow had a tremendous series for the Mount, going 8-for-15 (.533) with five doubles and five runs scored. Kory Britton went 6-for-13 (.462) with five RBI in the series, including a 4-for-5 day with two doubles and four RBI on Sunday.
ABOUT THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC was swept in a three-game America East series at Stony Brook over the weekend to fall to 14-13 overall and 4-5 in the conference. The Retrievers had won 10 of their previous 11 games prior to this past weekend. Nick Naumann leads the team with a .319 average while Andrew Casali is hitting .307. On the mound, Conrad Wozniak is the top starter, going 1-0 with a 1.49 ERA in six starts. UMBC is a perfect 9-0 at home this year.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES: The Mountaineers are 11-33 all-time against UMBC since moving to NCAA Division I in 1989. UMBC rallied for a 4-3 win in 11 innings on March 24th at the Mount's E.T. Straw Family Stadium. The Mount is 3-21 all-time on the road against the Retrievers, and had dropped the last six meetings in the series.
FIRST MEETING: UMBC rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Mount in 11 innings at Straw Family Stadium on March 24th. The Mount's Kevin Myers took a no-hitter to the seventh inning in the game. The Mount scored a pair of runs in the sixth to take a 2-0 lead. That lead held until the top of the ninth, when UMBC scored three times to take the lead. Vince Corbi's two-out two-run single tied the game, and a Mount error led to the third run. Tommy Quealy's RBI groundout in the bottom of the ninth tied the score, but Tim Kelly's pinch-hit RBI double in the 11th provided the winning hit for UMBC.
DIEHL NAMED CO-PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Mount St. Mary's junior left-hander was been named the Northeast Conference baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Diehl tossed seven scoreless innings in the Mount's 12-2 win over LIU Brooklyn on Sunday. Diehl allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out four in his seven scoreless innings of work. He improves to 2-3 on the season with a 2.83 ERA in 28.2 innings of work. Diehl is the second Mount pitcher to earn NEC weekly honors, joining Jordan Lawson (Camp Hill, Pa.), who won the award last week. This is the first time the Mount has had two different NEC Pitchers of the Week in the same season since Kent Worthington and Mike Matta in 2010.
CAREER CHARTS: Senior shortstop Kory Britton is hitting .364 this season while starting all 25 games. Britton is fourth all-time at the Mount with a career .342 average (79-for-231)…Fellow senior Andrew Clow leads the Mount with a .391 average, and he is currently 11th all-time at the Mount with a career .326 average (153-for-470)…Clow's 153 career hits are tied for 11th all-time at the Mount, and he needs seven to move past Dennis Jenks (1995-98, 159) into 10th place…Jay Knight has seven steals this year and now has a school-record 47 in his career…On the mound, Chris Campbell is third all-time with a 3.97 career ERA (88.1 IP) and fourth all-time in opponent batting average (.271).
THIS AND THAT: Andrew Clow is hitting .536 (15-for-28) with seven doubles and eight runs scored in NEC games this year…Kory Britton is hitting .357 (10-for-28) with five doubles and nine RBI in league play…The Mount pitching staff has a 3.84 ERA over the past 10 games…Since allowing two runs in his first appearance this year, Chris Campbell has a 1.29 ERA over his past 21 innings of work.
UP NEXT: The Mountaineers return to action this weekend with a four-game series at defending Northeast Conference champion Bryant. The series starts with a 3:00 p.m. matchup on Friday.
