Box Score 2 Brooklyn, N.Y. (April 11, 2015)—Starting pitcher Chris Campbell (Centerville, Va.) lifted the Mount St. Mary's University baseball team to a split of its Northeast Conference doubleheader at LIU Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon. After dropping the opening game, 5-3, the Mount rebounded behind Campbell's strong start with a 2-1 win in game two.
Game One: LIU Brooklyn 5, Mount St. Mary's 3
Mount St. Mary's (5-19, 3-4 NEC) took an early three-run lead, but LIU Brooklyn was able to rally for a 5-3 victory in the opening game of the Northeast Conference doubleheader at LIU Field.
The Mountaineers scored three times in the top of the second to take a 3-0 advantage. Zach Hostetter (Lebanona, Pa.) was hit by a pitch and Brian Parreira (Annapolis, Md.) followed with a single up the middle to put runners on first and second with no outs. Zach Call (Calvert ,Md.) reached on an error to load the bases, and an error on a Brendan Dabagian (Media, Pa.) grounder to short plated Hostetter with the first run. Jay Knight (Frederick, Md.) followed with a sacrifice fly, and Call came home with the third run on a wild pitch.
The Blackbirds (11-18, 4-3 NEC) answered with four runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead. Vincent Tranchina doubled to open the inning, and after a flyout, he scored when Anthony Capo reached on an error. Dom Paiotti's RBI singled cut the deficit to 3-2, and Mark Hernandez doubled to even the score. The Blackbirds took the lead on Andrew Turner's infield hit to short.
Charles Misiano's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third gave LIU a two-run advantage. From there, LIU starter Bobby Maxwell was able to hold the Mount off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
The Mount threatened in the top of the sixth when Andrew Clow (Bel Air, Md.) doubled, Kory Britton (Columbia, Md.) was hit by a pitch, and Parreira singled to left to load the bases with one out. Maxwell, however, struck out the next two batters to end the threat. The Mount was retired in order in the seventh.
Clow went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles while Parreira also went 2-for-3 at the plate in the loss. Kevin Myers (LaVale, Md.) started and took the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) in 1.2 innings. Nick DeCarlo (Montgomery Village, Md.) allowed one run in 3.2 innings of relief while Ben Smallenbroek (Davidsonville, Md.) pitched 0.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Paiotti went 3-for-4 to lead LIU while Tranchina was 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored. Maxwell had seven strikeouts while allowing three unearned runs and just four hits in the complete-game win.
Game Two: Mount St. Mary's 2, LIU Brooklyn 1
Campbell pitched six strong innings to lead the Mount to a 2-1 victory in the second game of the doubleheader. Campbell allowed one run and one hit with four strikeouts to lead the Mount to the win.
The Mount took the lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Britton singled with one out, and moved to second on a wild pitch. Parreira walked to put runners on first and second with two outs, and Tyler Post (Brookeville, Md.) followed with a base hit to left to score Britton with the first run of the game.
The Blackbirds evened the score in the bottom of the fourth. Tommy Jakubowski walked with one out, and he moved to second on an error on an errant pick-off attempt. He advanced to third on a Hernandez groundout to short, and came home to score on a Melvin Rios single to right, LIU's only hit off of Campbell.
The Mountaineers grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth. Clow doubled to lead off the inning, and moved to third on a passed ball. Britton walked to put runners on the corners for Hostetter, who brought home Clow when he reached on a fielder's choice on a sharply hit grounder to second base.
Campbell retired the Blackbirds in order in the sixth before yielding to Jordan Lawson (Camp Hill, Pa.) in the bottom of the seventh. Lawson struck out the first batter before Bobby Webb singled up the middle. Lawson buckled down to earn the save with a strikeout and a comebacker to the pitcher.
The teams conclude the four-game NEC series tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. game at LIU Field.
