Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (April 1, 2015)--Mount St. Mary's fell to visiting George Washington, 3-2, in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus. The Colonials scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to rally for the win.
Mount St. Mary's (2-14) grabbed the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Owens (Burke, Va.) singled with one out, and moved to second on a failed pick off attempt. Owens moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a Kory Britton (Columbia, Md.) base hit through the right side of the infield.
George Washington evened the score in the top of the third on a Bobby Campbell RBI single. The Mountaineers answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead. Andrew Clow (Bel Air, Md.) and Britton posted back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second with one out. Zach Hostetter (Lebanon, Pa.) then grounded into a fielder's choice with Britton out at second and Clow moving to third on the play. Clow then scampered home on a wild pitch to give the Mount a 2-1 lead.
Mount starter Scott Nickerson (Annapolis, Md.) maintained the lead with three scoreless frames before yielding to Michael Collins (Mercersburg, Pa.) in the top of the seventh. George Washington's Matt Cosentino led off the seventh with a single, and he moved to third on a pair of groundouts. Joey Bartosic plated Cosentino with a single to right field to even the score.
The Colonials took the lead with a run in the top of the eighth. Robbie Metz singled and Campbell followed with a bunt single to put runners on first and second with no outs. Jordan Lawson (Camp Hill, Pa.) came on in relief to face pinch hitter Ryan Xepoleas, who reached on an error on a bunt attempt. The Mount, however, got Metz trying to score on the play for the first out of the inning. Lawson then struck out the next batter before Austin Bonadio (Newtown, Conn.) was summoned from the Mount bullpen. A wild pitch allowed the go-ahead run to score.
The Mountaineers threatened in the ninth when Joshua Lenig (Dumfries, Va.) singled up the middle with one out, and pinch runner Mitch Sgrignoli (Middletown, Md.) moved to third on a Jay Knight (Frederick, Md.) two-out single up the middle. George Washington closer Eddie Muhl was able to escape the threat and earn the save by getting a strikeout for the final out
Britton went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Mount in the game, and is now 7-for-9 over the past two games to raise his batting average to a team-high .386. Nickerson had a solid start for the Mount, allowing one run and five hits in six innings, striking out four.
The Mount opens Northeast Conference play tomorrow against Central Connecticut State. The teams will play a doubleheader at Straw Family Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m.
