Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (March 24, 2015)--Mount St. Mary's pitcher Kevin Myers (LaVale, Md.) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but the Mountaineers fell to UMBC, 4-3, in 11 innings on Tuesday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus.
Myers, a junior right-hander, retired the first 12 UMBC batters before allowing back-to-back walks to lead off the top of the fifth inning. Myers was able to escape that jam with a strikeout and a double-play before retiring the Retrievers (6-9) in order in the top of the sixth to keep the game a scoreless tie.
Mount St. Mary's (2-12) took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Andrew Clow (Bel Air, Md.) singled to lead off the frame, and after a fielder's choice, Zach Hostetter (Lebanon, Pa.) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Brian Parreira (Annapolis, Md.) followed with a base hit to center field to score Kory Britton (Columbia, Md.) to give the Mount a 1-0 advantage.
Hostetter then came home on Joshua Lenig's (Dumfries, Va.) 1-6-3 groundout that was a line drive off the pitcher that was deflected to the shortstop for a 2-0 lead.
UMBC broke up the Myers no-hit bid on a Nick Naumann single to left field to start the seventh inning. Naumann was promptly caught stealing by Mount catcher Clow. Andrew Casali followed with a base hit, but he was retired at third base when he tried to advance two bases on a wild pitch. Hunter Dolshun followed with a double to center field for UMBC. The Mount brought in Jordan Lawson (Camp Hill, Pa.) in relief for Myers, and he retired the final batter on a grounder to shortstop.
The Mount maintained the 2-0 lead heading to the top of the ninth, but the Retrievers rallied for three runs with two outs to take the lead. Naumann and Casali each singled with one out to put runners on first and second. Lawson retired Dolshun on a ground out, and he intentionally walked Anthony Gatto to load the bases with two outs. Vince Corbi then tied the game when he singled to right center field to plate a pair of runs. UMBC took the lead when Mitchell Carroll reached on a Mount error with the go-ahead run scoring on the play.
Mount St. Mary's rallied with a run in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. Lenig walked to open the inning. Zach Call (Calvert, Md.) then reached on an error on his sacrifice bunt with pinch-runner Chad Diehl (Westminster, Md.) moving to third on the play. After a strikeout, Tommy Quealy's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) groundout scored Diehl with the tying run.
UMBC scored the winning run in the 11th on an RBI double down the left field line by pinch-hitter Tim Kelly.
Myers struck out three while walking two and allowing three hits in 6.2 innings for the Mount. Lawson allowed three runs (two earned) in 2.1 innings of relief while Ben Smallenbroek (Davidsonville, Md.) allowed one run in two innings in the game.
Hostetter and Call each went 2-for-4 at the plate to pace the Mount offense. Naumann and Casali each had two hits for UMBC in the win.
