MOUNT UPDATE: The Mount continues its three-game road swing with two neutral site games as part of the first-ever Battle of Baltimore. The Mountaineers open the competition at the Ridley Athletic Complex on the campus of Loyola when they take on local rival UMBC on Friday, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. Two days later, the Mount heads to the Tiger Soccer Complex at Towson to face Loyola at noon.
BATTLE OF BALTIMORE: The first-ever Battle of Baltimore includes the Mount, Loyola, Towson and UMBC. Loyola and Towson will serve as the host sites for the competition. In other games, Loyola hosts Towson on Friday and Towson hosts UMBC on Sunday.
LONG-STANDING RIVALS: The Mount's all-time series with UMBC and Loyola date back to the program's first varsity season in 1992. In all, the Mount has faced UMBC 13 times and Loyola seven times prior to this week's action.
LAST TIME OUT: Junior midfielder Emma Blair scored her third career goal in the first half of the Mount's 7-1 road loss at Bucknell on Tuesday night. The Mount recorded a season-high 10 shots, but Bucknell's balanced attack proved to be too much with four first-half goals and three in the final 45 minutes.
ABOUT UMBC: Coming off an America East Tournament Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2013, the Retrievers are off to a 4-1 start with wins over Navy, Loyola, Howard and Bucknell. UMBC has outscored opponents by a 7-4 margin through five games with Lina Nanov leading the way with five points on two goals and one assist.
LAST YEAR VS. UMBC: In the season opener for both squads in 2013, then-sophomore Emma Blair's first career goal powered the Mount past UMBC in a 1-0 shutout on Aug. 23. Blair fired a shot past UMBC's goalkeeper from 18 yards out in the 29th minute of play, and the Mount's defense made the goal stand up in the 1-0 win.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. UMBC: After UMBC won the first 11 matchups with the Mount, the momentum in the series has swung to the Mountaineers with wins in the last two games. Mount St. Mary's picked up its first-ever win over UMBC in 2006 by a 4-0 final score. Following a six-year hiatus from the series, the Mount was victorious in last season's meeting as well.
ABOUT LOYOLA: Jessica Van Dyke, the team's offensive leader with seven points, has the Greyhounds off to a 2-4 start with shutout wins over George Mason and Howard. Most recently on Sept. 7, Loyola was handed a 1-0 loss by Saint Joseph's. Loyola was selected to finish eighth in the Patriot League preseason poll.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. LOYOLA: The Mount has lost all seven of the all-time meetings with the Greyhounds. The last time the two sides squared off was 2010 when Loyola captured a 1-0 victory in overtime.
IN GOAL: Since Rachel Bourne and Vicky Cocozza arrived on campus prior to the 2012 season, the Mount has used a two-goalkeeper system. Now juniors, Bourne ranks third in the Northeast Conference with 29 saves, while Cocozza is tied for fourth in the NEC with 27 saves.
