Box Score College Park, Md. (April 9, 2014)—The Mount St. Mary's baseball team edged Maryland, 3-2, on Wednesday night in a non-conference matchup at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. Andrew Clow went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to pace the Mountaineers in the victory. It is the second consecutive season that the Mount has won at Maryland as the Mount pitching staff stranded nine runners over the last three innings to preserve the victory.
The Mount (9-11) broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Andrew Frazier singled with one out, and Kory Britton's two-out single put runners on first and second. Ryan Owens followed with an infield single, and Frazier then scampered home on an error by the Maryland second baseman to give the Mount the lead.
Mount St. Mary's added to its lead with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Chris Del Vecchio singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Tommy Quealy walked, and Brandon Scott was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. After a strikeout, Clow came through with a clutch single to right field, driving in two runs to give Mount St. Mary's a 3-0 advantage.
Maryland got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Mount advantage to 3-1. Two walks and an error loaded the bases for the Terrapins with no outs. After a fly out the center, Kyle Connivisar walked with the bases loaded to force home a run. Mount relief pitcher Austin Bonadio then got a strikeout and fly out to left to escape the jam.
Jordan Lawson came on in relief for the Mount in the bottom of the eighth, and walked the first two batters he faced. Mount head coach Scott Thomson then summoned his top reliever, Nick Riley, into the game. Riley promptly picked off the runner from second base to get the first out of the inning, but then walked the next batter. After a popout, the next Maryland batter was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Riley, however, retired LaMonte Wade on a fly out to end the threat.
Maryland (20-11) made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth. Brett Schmitt singled, and Jose Cuas and pinch hitter Tim Lewis each walked to load the bases. Maryland's Kevin Martin lofted a sacrifice fly to cut the Mount advantage to 3-2. After another walk loaded the bases, Riley was able to get Charlie White on a come-backer to the mound to end the game.
Scott Nickerson started and earned the win for the Mount, tossing five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out four. Chad Diehl allowed an unearned run in 1.1 innings of relief while Riley picked up the save, allowing one run in two innings of work.
Clow, Frazier and Owens each went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Mountaineers in the victory.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action with a four-game Northeast Conference series this weekend against LIU Brooklyn at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus. The series begins on Friday with a nine-inning game starting at 3:00 p.m.
