Mount St. Mary's Baseball Tops Central Connecticut State, 6-5, to Split Four-Game Set

Box Score

New Britain, Conn. (April 6, 2014)--Mount St. Mary's topped Central Connecticut State, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon to earn a split in the four-game Northeast Conference series.  Reliever Nick Riley earned a three-inning save to preserve the win for the Mountaineers.

Mount St. Mary's (8-11, 2-2 NEC) took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning.  Kory Britton led off the frame with his first home run of the season.  Zach Hostetter and Joshua Lenig each singled with one out to put runners on the corners.  Chris Del Vecchio followed with a base hit to center field to plate Hostetter for the two-run advantage.

The Blue Devils answered with two runs in the bottom of the second on a two-run single from Anthony Turgeon.  The Mount regained the lead in the top of the third when Andrew Clow singled with one out, stole second base, and scored on a Ryan Owens single through the right side of the infield.

A three-run fourth gave the Mount a 6-2 advantage.  Del Vecchio and Tommy Quealy each singled with one out to start the rally.  Leadoff hitter Brandon Scott followed with a triple to right-center field to push the Mount lead to 5-2.  Andrew Frazier then doubled down the left field line to give the Mount a four-run cushion.

CCSU (9-9, 2-2 NEC) cut into the Mount lead by scoring once in the fourth and two more times in the fifth.  Turgeon had a sacrifice fly in the fourth, while Dominic Severino and Connor Fitzsimons each had RBI singles in the fifth to make the score 6-5.  CCSU was threatening for more runs with the bases loaded and two outs, but Jordan Lawson was able to escape the jam with a groundout.

From there, the Mount bullpen was able to hold on for the victory.  Lawson and Seth Schubert combined for a scoreless bottom of the sixth, and Riley allowed one hit over the final three innings to earn his second save of the series.

Hostetter and Del Vecchio each went 2-for-4 while Quealy was 2-for-3 in the game to lead the Mount offense, which saw all nine starters record hits in the contest.  Severino went 3-for-5 while Turgeon was 2-for-3 with three RBI for CCSU in the loss.

Mount starter Kevin Myers allowed three runs in 3.1 innings of work.  Lawson earned the win, allowing two runs in two innings of relief.

The Mountaineers are back in action on Wednesday, April 9, with a 6:35 game at Maryland.
