Box Score 2 Emmitsburg, Md. (April 27, 2014) – The Mount St. Mary's baseball team wrapped up a home series with Northeast Conference-leading Bryant with a pair of losses at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on Sunday. Completing the final six innings of Friday's rainout, the Mount was handed an 8-3 loss in the make-up game before falling, 12-3, in the second game.
Brandon Scott, Andrew Frazier and Chris Del Vecchio all picked up multi-hit games for the Mount (13-20, 6-10 NEC) over the course of the two games. Bryant (31-10, 11-1 NEC) recorded 27 hits in the two games to complete the weekend sweep.
GAME ONE
BRYANT 8 – MOUNT 3
Trailing 3-0 when play was halted on Friday, the Mount dug itself a 6-0 hole in the fifth and was never able to recover in an 8-3 loss in the first game on Sunday.
In the second inning of Friday's action, Bryant's Tom Gavitt rocked a solo home run to left before Buck McCarthy picked up a two-run homer for a 3-0 lead. Moving ahead to Sunday, the Bulldogs added three more runs in the top of the fifth for a 6-0 advantage.
The Mount got a run back in the sixth thanks to the heads-up base running of Tommy Quealy. The Mount's centerfielder struck out, but was able to reach first when the third strike got away from the Bryant catcher. After moving to second on Frazier's groundout, Quealy came around to score on Scott's RBI single to left to cut the Mount's deficit to 6-1.
Bryant tacked on insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings for an 8-1 edge.
The Mount continued to battle in the ninth and scored two runs on Frazier's double down the right field line to plate Quealy and Del Vecchio to bring the Mount's run total to three.
Karl Lamont tossed 4.1 innings in the game, including 3.0 on Friday, allowing six runs on 11 hits to take the loss. Out of the bullpen, Scott Nickerson and Chad Diehl were effective, both allowing one earned run in 2.1 innings apiece. Jack Patterson pitched all six innings for the Bulldogs on Sunday, striking out six while yielding three runs on four hits to earn the win.
GAME TWO
BRYANT 12 – MOUNT 3
The Mount trailed Bryant by just one at 4-3 until the Bulldogs scored three runs in the seventh and five in the eighth to pull away with the 12-3 win in the series finale.
Down 4-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth, the Mountaineers cut into the lead with three runs. A fielding error allowed Zach Hostetter to score from second before Del Vecchio singled to center to score Ryan Owens. For the final run, Quealy added an RBI single to the outfield allowing Joshua Lenig to score to trim the deficit to 4-3.
Big offensive innings by the Bulldogs in the seventh and eighth innings put the game out of reach.
Both teams used five pitchers apiece with Bryant's Michael Marshall earning the win in relief after pitching 1.2 innings without giving up a run. Kevin Myers took the loss with three earned runs on five hits in 3.2 innings. Four other pitchers finished the game for the Mount, including Ben Smallenbroek, who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Next on the schedule, the Mount heads to Penn State to take on the Nittany Lions on Wednesday, April 30, at 6:30 p.m.
