Mount Baseball Drops Home Twinbill to NEC-Leading Bryant

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 26, 2014) – Facing first-place Bryant in a home doubleheader at E.T. Straw Family Stadium, the Mount St. Mary's baseball team fell by scores of 12-2 and 5-4 on Saturday afternoon in Northeast Conference play.

Despite the team's two losses, junior catcher Andrew Clow went 3-for-6 at the plate to improve his NEC-leading batting average to .421. The Mount falls to 13-18, including 6-8 in NEC action as the Bulldogs move to 29-10 with a 9-1 conference mark.

GAME ONE
BRYANT 12 – MOUNT 2
Bryant jumped on the Mount by taking a 4-0 lead through two innings of game one en route to a 12-2 victory. After a single run in the first, the Bulldogs added three in the second on an A.J. Zarozny home run and RBIs from Brandon Bingel and Jonathan Scott.

Zarozny tacked on another home run in the fifth to go with a two-run shot from John Mullen in the fourth as the Bulldogs stretched their lead to 12-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth.

The Mountaineers broke through with two runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 12-2. After Andrew Frazier reached on a Bryant error, Clow roped a double to center to move Frazier to third. Next up, Kory Britton singled to right to plate Frazier and Clow. Later in the frame, the Mount had runners on second and third but could not convert.

Bryant pitcher Craig Schlitter tossed a complete game with nine strikeouts while giving up one earned run on six hits. On the mound for the Mount, starter Seth Shubert yielded three earned runs on five hits in two innings of work before the game was turned over to the bullpen. The rest of the way, Austin Bonadio went three innings before giving way to Ben Smallenbroek for one inning with Jordan Lawson wrapping up the game with a scoreless seventh.

Britton led the Mount with two hits in game one, while Zarozny, Bingel and Buck McCarthy added three hits apiece for Bryant.

GAME TWO
BRYANT 5 – MOUNT 4
After a shaky first inning, the Mount bounced back by outscoring Bryant, 4-0, in the final six innings, but it was not enough to earn a split in the doubleheader.

Mount pitcher Vincent Molesky responded from giving up five first inning runs, two of which were earned, by keeping the high-scoring Bulldogs off the scoreboard over the next five innings. Molesky's line included two strikeouts, eight hits and two earned runs in six innings.

Bryant was able to score on Mullen's two-RBI double to center, followed by Robby Rinn's RBI groundout and McCarthy's two-run home run in the first inning.

The Mount began chipping away and broke through with two runs in the bottom of the third. With runners on first and third, Clow knocked a sacrifice fly to center to plate Tommy Quealy and two batters later, Ryan Owens came through with an RBI single to score Brandon Scott from second.

Chris Del Vecchio homered to center to help the Mount get another run back and trim the deficit to 5-3 in the fourth.

The Mount made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh when Quealy and Frazier both singled to right to lead off. Two batters later, Clow chopped an infield single, and an errant throw allowed runners to advance with Quealy scoring to put the score at 5-4.

Bryant's closer, Trevor Lacosse was able to get the next two batters out to pick up the save as the Mount finished the game with runners on second and third. Vaughn Hayward pitched six innings, allowing four runs on nine hits in the win for Bryant.

Tomorrow at noon, the Mount and Bryant will make up the suspended game from Friday that was called after three innings due to rain. Following the make-up game, the two sides will square off for their regularly-scheduled game.
