Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (April 13, 2014)--Mount St. Mary's dropped the final game of its Northeast Conference series to LIU Brooklyn, 23-11, on Sunday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus. Andrew Clow went 3-for-5 in the game with a triple and a home run.
The Blackbirds (18-12-1, 5-3 NEC) scored single runs in each of the first two innings to take the early 2-0 advantage. The Mountaineers bounced back on a Zach Hostetter three-run homer in the bottom of the second. Kory Britton and Ryan Owens led off the bottom of the second with base hits to set the table for Hostetter. The redshirt freshman then belted the ball over the left-field fence for his first career homer.
LIU answered with three runs in the top of the third, but the Mount again bounced back, scoring three times in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-5 lead. Andrew Frazier walked with one out, and Clow followed with a base hit. Britton singled to right to plate Frazier with Clow moving to third on the hit. Ryan Owens reached on a fielder's choice, plating Clow with the tying run. Hostetter walked, and Joshua Lenig's single to right scored Britton with the go-ahead run
LIU regained the lead by scoring five times in the top of the fourth. Pete Leonello had a two-run triple to give LIU a 7-6 lead. John Ziznewski added a two-run homer later in the frame.
The Mountaineers (10-14, 3-5 NEC) rebounded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 10-9. Tommy Quealy walked with one out, and scored on Brandon Scott's double to left field. Frazier followed with a two-base hit down the left-field line to score Scott, and Clow then laced a one-out triple to center field to make it 10-9.
The Blackbirds scored four runs in the top of the fifth to make the score 14-9, but the Mount again fought back. Hostetter manufactured a run in the bottom of the fifth. He singled, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on an Chris Del Vecchio ground out.
Clow belted a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to cut the LIU lead to 14-11. The Blackbirds, however, scored two runs in the seventh, one in the eighth, and six more in the ninth to seal the win.
Clow, who leads the Northeast Conference with a .410 average, finished the day 3-for-5, with a triple, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI. Hostetter went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI while Britton was 3-for-5 at the plate in the game. Lenig added a pair of hits as well for the Mountaineers.
Jon McAllister went 5-for-7 with five runs scored while Ziznewski was 4-for-6 with five BI and three runs scored for LIU in the win.
The Mountaineers are back in action on Thursday, April 17, with a 3:00 p.m. game at Sacred Heart.
