Box Score 2 Emmitsburg, Md. (April 12, 2014)—Mount St. Mary's split a Northeast Conference doubleheader with visiting LIU Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus. The Mount took the opening game, 6-2, before dropping the nightcap, 12-5.
Game One
Mount St. Mary's 6, LIU Brooklyn 2
Kory Britton went 3-for-3 while Zach Hostetter was 2-for-3 with a pair of run scored to lead the Mount to a 6-2 victory in the opening game of the doubleheader. Vincent Molesky picked up the win, allowing two runs in 5.2 innings of work.
The Mount (10-13, 3-4 NEC) took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Britton opened the inning with a double to left, and he moved to third on a wild pitch. Hostetter followed with a one-out single to left to plate Britton with the game's first run. Hostetter then stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a Brian Drapeau wild pitch.
The Blackbirds answered with single runs in the third and fourth innings to knot the game at 2-2. Hostetter doubled to right field to open the bottom of the fourth. He advanced to third on a balk, and came home on a Chris Del Vecchio base hit.
The Mountaineers added three runs in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. Britton's RBI double to left-center field drove in the first run of the inning. Ryan Owens then laced a single to right to plate Andrew Clow, and Britton followed when the LIU right fielder bobbled the ball.
LIU threatened in the top of the sixth, putting runners on second and third with one out. Mount head coach Scott Thomson summoned closer Nick Riley. After hitting the first batter to load the bases, Riley got out of the jam with a flyout to center. Riley then pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up his fourth save of the year.
Britton finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while Hostetter went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Del Vecchio chipped in a 2-for-2 effort in the win. Molesky struck out two while allowing two runs and seven hits in 5.2 innings to improve to 2-3 on the year.
Game Two
LIU Brooklyn 12, Mount St. Mary's 5
LIU Brooklyn (17-12-1, 4-3 NEC) scored six times in the second inning to take control of the second game en route to a 12-5 victory.
Bobby Webb's two-run single in the top of the first gave LIU an early two-run advantage. The Blackbirds then scored six times in the second to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Webb added another two-run single in the second.
Mark Hernandez roped an RBI double in the top of the third to stretch the LIU advantage to 9-0 before the Clow's RBI single in the bottom of the inning put the Mount on the scoreboard.
After LIU scored a pair of runs in the fifth, Clow added a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to make it 11-2. Trailing 12-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Mount scored three times to make the final 12-5. Frazier, Britton and Michael Flyte each had RBI singles in the inning.
Frazier went 3-for-4 while Clow and Hostetter each went 2-for-3 for the Mount in the second game. Tommy Quealy was 2-for-2 with three runs scored for the Mountaineers as well.
Connor Graber took the loss, allowing eight runs (six earned) in 1.1 innings. Chad Diehl allowed three runs in 3.1 innings of relief while Jordan Lawson allowed one run in 2.1 innings of work.
The four-game series concludes tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. game.
