Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (April 11, 2014)--Mount St. Mary's dropped the opening game of its four-game series to LIU Brooklyn, 16-9, on Friday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus. Andrew Clow went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI for the Mountaineers in the loss.
The Blackbirds (16-11-1, 3-2 NEC) took control of the game early, scoring five unearned runs in the top of the first, and adding six more runs in the second to take an 11-0 lead.
Trailing 12-0, the Mount got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when Andrew Frazier singled, and came around to score on a Clow double to right-center.
Mount St. Mary's (9-12, 2-3 NEC) added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 12-5. Zach Hostetter doubled to open the inning, and Joshua Lenig walked to put two runners on base. Chris Del Vecchio then cleared the bases with his first career home run to make it a 12-4 game. Tommy Quealy was hit by a pitch, and Brandon Scott singled to put runners on first and second. After a force out, Clow plated Quealy with a sacrifice fly.
LIU answered with four unearned runs in the top of the sixth. Pete Leonello scored on a passed ball, and Bobby Webb added a two-run double. Kevin Needham's RBI single pushed the LIU lead to 16-5.
Clow belted a two-run homer, his first career long ball, to cut the deficit to 16-7 in the botto of the seventh. The Mount added a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth to close out the scoring. Frazier had an RBI double and Kory Britton a run-scoring single in the frame.
Starter Karl Lamont took the loss, allowing 10 runs (four earned) in one-plus innings of work. Austin Bonadio tossed two innings of relief, allowing two runs (one earned). Ben Smallenbroek allowed four unearned runs in 2.2 innings of relief while Seth Schubert pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Clow finished 3-for-4 with four RBI to raise his average to a team-best .397. Owens was 3-for-5 while Frazier finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Hostetter also had two hits for the Mount in the loss.
John Ziznewski went 3-for-4 with a home run, four runs scored and four RBI for the Blackbirds. Webb and Needham each went 4-for-6 at the plate as well.
The four-game series continued tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
