Box Score Bethlehem, Pa. (March 23, 2014)—Mount St. Mary's baseball was edged by Lehigh, 7-6, in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon. Lehigh rallied for two runs in the ninth to tie the game and force extra innings.
The Mount (6-8) took a 1-0 lead in the first when Andrew Frazier singled, stole second, and scored on Kory Britton's RBI double.
The Mountain Hawks scored three times in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 advantage. John Elson walked to open the inning, and scored on Mike Garzillo's triple. Joe Abeln brought home Garzillo with a sacrifice fly, and Tyler Brong's solo home run stretched the lead to 3-1.
Mount St. Mary's scored a pair of runs in the third to even the score. Zach Hostetter reached on an error, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Joshua Lenig two-base hit. Brandon Scott's RBI groundout plated Lenig with the tying run.
Lehigh regained the lead with a single run in the bottom of the third, but Britton's RBI single in the top of the fifth tied the game at 4-4.
Mount St. Mary's scored a run in the top of the seventh to take a one-run lead. Scott led off with a walk, and moved to second on a passed ball. After a Frazier sacrifice bunt, Ryan Owens walked and stole second to put runners on second and third with one out. Britton's sacrifice fly to center plated Scott with the go-ahead run.
The Mount added another run in the eighth when Chris Del Vecchio singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a Scott base hit.
Lehigh was able to tie the game with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth. Tim McKay singled to start the rally. After a fly out, David Young reached on an error to put runners on first and second. After a wild pitch moved the runners up, Elson plated both runners on a hit to center field.
The Mount threatened in the top of the 10th when Scott walked and stole second with one out. Frazier followed with a base hit to put runners on the corners with one out. The Mount however saw both runners thrown out on an attempted squeeze play to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 11th, McKay singled and moved to second on a Lance Kirschenbaum one-out walk. McKay moved to third on Elson's fly out to center field. Kirschenbaum stole second, and Garzillo walked to load the bases. A passed ball then allowed McKay to scamper home with the winning run.
Britton led the Mount by going 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI in the game. Scott was 1-for-4 with two walks, two RBI, and stolen base. Frazier went 2-for-5 with two runs scored while Lenig was 2-for-4 as well.
On the mound, Vincent Molesky allowed four runs with six strikeouts in five innings of work. Kevin Myers, Seth Schubert and Nick Riley followed with one scoreless inning each in relief. Chad Diehl allowed two unearned runs in one inning of work, while Jordan Lawson took the loss allowing an unearned run in 1.2 innings.
The Mountaineers are back in action with a three-game home series on March 29 and 30 at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1:00 p.m.
