Box Score 2 Bethlehem, Pa. (March 22, 2014)--Mount St. Mary's was swept in Saturday's doubleheader at Lehigh's Goodman Field. The Mount lost the opening game, 14-1, before dropping the second game of the twinbill, 5-1.
In the opener, the Mountain Hawks (6-8) struck for five runs in the first and three more in the second to take control of the game. The Mount (6-7) got on the scoreboard when Brandon Scott scored on a Kory Britton RBI single in the top of the sixth.
Britton went 2-for-3 to pace the Mount offense in the game. Mike Garzillo went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored while Joe Abeln added a 2-for-2 game with two RBI and two runs scored as well.
Mount starter Connor Graber allowed seven runs in one-plus innings of work. Jordan Lawson allowed two runs in three innings of relief.
Lehigh scored five times in the bottom of the eighth to rally for a 5-1 victory in game two.
The Mount took the 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Andrew Clow singled and Zach Hostetter walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners over, Clow scored on a Chris Del Vecchio groundout.
Mount starter Karl Lamont maintained the lead, allowing just one hit and no runs in the first seven innings. Lehigh, however, was able to break through against Lamont in the eighth. With one out, Tim McKay and Patrick Donnelly singled to put runners on first and second. David Young pinch hit, and singled through the right side to score McKay to tie the game at 1-1. The go-ahead run scored on a John Elson squeeze bunt.
The Mountain Hawks added three more insurance runs in the inning.
Andrew Frazier, Ryan Owens and Clow each had two hits in the loss for the Mount, which left nine runners on base in the game. Lamont allowed four runs on five hits to take the loss.
The teams complete the three-game series tomorrow.
