Box Score 2 Bel Air, Md. (March 10, 2014) – The Mount baseball team suffered a pair of losses to Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday, falling by scores of 5-3 and 8-4 in a doubleheader at Harford Community College. Freshman Andrew Frazier led the Mountaineers with three hits on the day.
The Mount (2-5) positioned itself for a win in game one with a 3-2 lead over UMES (2-8) heading into the eighth before the Hawks scored three runs in the final two innings to steal the win. Karl Lamont, who pitched seven strong innings with seven strikeouts, scattered 10 hits and exited the game with the Mount in front 3-2.
In the top of the eighth, Justin Dattilo doubled to left to lead off the frame for the Hawks. The next batter, Jeffrey Fleetwood, followed with another double to plate Dattilo and level the score at 3-3.
With one out in the top of the ninth, UMES came away with three-consecutive singles to grab a 4-3 lead and with runners on first and third, Dattilo knocked an RBI sacrifice fly to left field for a 5-3 edge. UMES closer Devin Repine sat the Mount down in order in the ninth to preserve the win.
The Hawks outhit the Mount, 15-9, in game one with Frazier and Andrew Clow notching two hits apiece for the Mountaineers.
In the second game, the Mount dug itself an early 8-0 deficit through two innings and was never able to recover.
The Mount attempted to claw back into the game with three runs in the bottom of the third without recording a hit. With two outs, three Mount batters in a row worked walks to load the bases. A fielding error by the Hawks allowed Chris Del Vecchio to score from third for the Mount's first run. Frazier and Ryan Owens followed up with back-to-back walks to force in two more runs to put Mount down just five at 8-3.
One more run for the Mount in the seventh and final inning cut the deficit to 8-4, but it was not enough to catch the Hawks. Joshua Lenig led off with a double and took third on Tommy Quealy's single. Lenig scored from third when Brandon Scott hit into a double play to score the Mount's fourth run.
Austin Bonadio registered a strong outing with 3.2 innings of work in relief with five strikeouts. Bonadio yielded zero runs on four hits and two walks.
Next on the schedule, the Mount hosts a three-game series versus NYIT on March 14-16.
