Box Score Starkville, Miss. (Feb. 26, 2014)--Mount St. Mary's dropped the second game of its two-game series at No. 10 Mississippi State, 10-1, on Wednesday. The Bulldogs broke open a close game with six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Mount St. Mary's (2-3) scored a run in the top of the second to take the early lead. Zach Hostetter walked with one out, and moved to second on Andrew Clow's single up the middle. Hostetter then came around to score on a Mississippi State error.
Mississippi State (6-4) gained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third off Vincent Molesky, who came on in relief of starter Karl Lamont. The Bulldogs added another run in the fourth to push the lead to 4-1.
The six run eighth inning sealed the win for the Bulldogs. The Mountaineers were limited to three hits in the game as Brandon Scott and Kory Britton had singles in addition to Clow's base hit.
Lamont pitched two scoreless innings in his second start of the season for the Mountaineers. Molesky allowed three runs in the third, and Connor Graber was touched up for a run in the fourth. Austin Bonadio pitched a scoreless fifth while Scott Nickerson tossed two scoreless innings.
The Mount's three game series with Penn State scheduled for March 1-2 at Straw Family Stadium has been cancelled. A make-up date has yet to be determined. The Mount's next scheduled game is at home against Maryland-Eastern Shore on March 4th.
