Box Score Starkville, Miss. (February 25, 2014)—Mount St. Mary's lost at No. 10 Mississippi State, 13-1, in a non-conference baseball matchup at Dudy Noble Field on Tuesday. The Mount falls to 2-2 on the season with the loss.
After Mississippi State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, the Mountaineers evened the score in the third. Zach Call singled and moved to second on a ground out. Ryan Owens came through with a two-out single to plate Call with the tying run.
The Bulldogs (5-4) regained the lead in the bottom of the third on a Wes Rea sacrifice fly, and took control of the game with a seven-run fourth inning. After a sacrifice fly scored the first run in the frame, Mississippi State followed with six consecutive RBI singles to push the advantage to 9-1. From there, the Bulldogs were able to cruise to the win.
Call went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored to lead the Mount offense while Owens, Brandon Scott, Kory Britton and Zach Hostetter each singled.
Mount starter Kevin Myers allowed four runs (three earned) in 3.1 innings to take the loss. Ben Bracewell struck out eight while allowing six hits and one run in seven innings to pick up the win for Mississippi State.
The teams will conclude their two game series tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. (CT).
