Baseball Closes 2013 Season with 7-5 Loss at Central Connecticut State

Box Score

New Britain, Conn. (May 19, 2013)--Mount St. Mary's lost to Central Connecticut State, 7-5, in the final game of the season on Sunday afternoon.  Jay Knight broke the Mount's career stolen base record in the loss.

Central Connecticut State (28-25, 16-16 NEC) took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, scoring one run on a Mike Washburn RBI single and two more on a Mount scoring error.

The Mount (11-37, 6-26 NEC) answered with two runs in the second.  Tom Healy led off with a base hit, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher.  Mo Moriarty walked, and he stole second.  Healy came home to score on another throwing error by the catcher with Moriarty moving to third.  Andrew Clow plated Moriarty with an RBI groundout.

After CCSU stretched the lead to 5-2, the Mount tied the game with a three run sixth inning.  Mark Quaranta and Sam Nott each singled to put runners on first and second.  Healy followed with a double down the left field line to cut the deficit to two runs.  Moriarty then added a two-run double to tie the game.

Central Connecticut State scored twice in the seventh to earn the win.

Moriarty went 2-for-3 for the Mount while Healy was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Nick Walker added a pair of hits with Knight going 1-for-5 with a stolen base.

Kevin Myers started for the Mount, allowing four runs (two earned) in 2.2 innings.  Buddy Fields closed his career by allowing one run in 3.1 innings of relief.  Chris Del Vecchio took the loss, allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning.

Knight's steal was the 40th of his career, breaking Wayne Crowley's school-record 39 steals set from 1997-00.

Healy's two-hit day allowed the senior to finish the season with a .380 average, tied for the third-best single-season battting average in Mount history. Healy is also tied with Monmouth's Owen Stewart for the NEC batting title with Sacred Heart's John Murphy in third with a .378 average. Stewart and Murphy still have the NEC Tournament to play this year.

Nott finished the year leading the team in both home runs (9) and RBIs (44).
