Sam Nott Homers Twice, but Mount St. Mary's Falls to Monmouth in Final Game of Series

Box Score

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 7, 2013)--Sam Nott homered twice, but it was not enough as Mount St. Mary's fell to Monmouth, 15-4, in the final game of a four-game Northeast Conference series on Sunday afternoon at Straw Family Stadium on campus.

The Hawks (16-11, 9-3 NEC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on Chris Perret's RBI single through the right side of the infield.  The Mount threatened in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases when Jay Knight reached on an error, Zane Bard singled, and Mark Quaranta walked.  Monmouth starter Dan Smith escaped the jam when he got Mo Moriarty to fly out to right field.

Monmouth added a pair of runs in the fourth on RBI singles from Jon Guida and Dan Shea.  The Mount (6-20, 2-10 NEC) again threatened in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with one out on singles from Andrew Clow and Jack Schwartz and a Brandon Scott walk.  Smith, however, got a strikeout and a groundout to keep the Mount off the scoreboard.

The Hawks then took control of the game with a six-run fifth inning.  Craig Sweeney started the rally with a two-run homer to left field.  Shea, Steve Wilgus and Perret added RBI singles for Monmouth in the inning.

Nott got the Mount on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth.  Bard singled to open the inning, and with two outs, Nott cracked a two-run homer to left field to make the score 9-2.

Monmouth added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to stretch the lead to 11-2, but the Mount answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth.  Nott belted a solo home run to lead off the eighth for the Mountaineers.  It was Nott's team-leading seventh home run of the year, and it is his second game this year with two home runs.  He had a pair of home runs in the Mount's 10-5 home win over Iona on Feb. 16.

Tommy Quealy added a pinch-hit RBI single to right field in the eighth for the Mountaineers as well.

Sweeney added his second home run of the game, a three-run wind-aided shot in the top of the ninth, for Monmouth.  Guida closed out the scoring with a solo home run.

Nott went 2-for-4 with two home runs, two runs scored, and three RBI to pace the Mount in the loss.  Clow added three hits with Bard chipping in two in the game.

Guida and Owen Stewart each went 4-for-6 at the plate for Monmouth, which had 21 hits in the game.

Mount starter Vincent Molesky (0-2) allowed three runs and six hits in three-plus innings.  Alain Girman allowed six runs (three earned) in 1.1 innings of relief while Kevin Myers allowed one earned run in 3.2 innings out of the bullpen.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Wednesday, April 10, when Monmouth visits for a 4:00 p.m. game at Straw Family Stadium on campus.
