Mount St. Mary's Clips Quinnipiac, 6-4, in Series Opener

Box Score

Emmitsburg, Md. (March 28, 2013)--Jay Knight went 4-for-5 with two doubles and a home run to pace Mount St. Mary's to a 6-4 win over Quinnipiac on Thursday afternoon in the opening game of a four-game series at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus.

After Quinnipiac took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly in the top of the second, Knight led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run over the right field fence to even the score.  Zane Bard followed with a sharp single to right field, and the Mount then took the lead on a perfectly executed hit-and-run.  With Bard moving on the pitch, Tom Healy rapped a singled behind the shortstop with Bard moving to third on the play.  Bard then came around to score when the left fielder misplayed the ball.

The Mount (5-14, 1-4 NEC) added to the lead in the fourth when Nick Walker doubled, moved to third on a Jack Schwartz sacrifice bunt, and then scored on a squeeze bunt from Zach Smith.

The Bobcats got a run back in the sixth on a Scott Donaghue sacrfice fly, but the Mount countered with three runs in the seventh for a 6-2 advantage.

Knight led off the inning with a double to left center field.  Bard laid down a sacrifice bunt to the first baseman, who tried to get Knight at third.  His throw was off the mark, allowing Knight to scamper home to give the Mount a 4-2 advantage.

Sam Nott singled to right field to plate Bard, and he came around to score on a Tommy Quealy RBI single that pushed the lead to 6-2.

Quinnipiac (7-9, 2-3 NEC) scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth to get back into the game.  Brian Ruditys and Chris Migani walked, and Donaghue lofted a two-out double to center field to plate both runners to make it a two-run game.

Vincent Molesky came on in the ninth for the Mountaineers to close out the game.  Nic Civale led off the inning with a single, and after Molesky got a stirkeout and a pop out, Ruditys hit a double down the right field line to put runners on second and third with two outs.  Molesky, however, got Mike Palladino on a soft line drive to first base to end the game to seal the win.

Starter Thomas Williams picked up the win for the Mount, allowing two runs with five strikeouts in five-plus innings.  Chris Campbell pitched a scoreless inning of relief while Scott Nickerson allowed two runs with two strikeouts in two innings.  Molesky had a strikeout in one inning to earn his first save of the year.

Knight finished 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and two runs scored to lead the Mount offense.  Healy added three hits in the game for the mount while Bard was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Quinnipiac starter Derek Lamacchia, who entered the game with a 0.58 ERA in 31.0 innings, took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) in 6.2 innings of work.  He struck out 10 while allowing 11 base hits.

The teams continue the series tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
