Mount Drops Both Games of Twinbill at Bryant

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Smithfield, R.I. (March 23, 2013)--Mount St. Mary's lost both ends of a Saturday doubleheader at Bryant, falling 7-3 in the opener and 5-2 in the nightcap.  Tom Healy went 2-for-3 with a home run in the opening game.

In the first game, the Mount (4-13, 0-3 NEC) rallied from an early two-run deficit to take a 3-2 advantage in the top of the fourth inning.  Bryant scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to grab the early lead, but the Mount countered with a run in the top of the third on a Zane Bard RBI single.

Healy belted a solo home run with one out in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2.  Mount St. Mary's then loaded the bases when Andrew Clow reached on a passed ball on a third strike, Mo Moriarty walked and Nick Walker reached on an error.  Brandon Scott then laid down a squeeze bunt to plate the go-ahead run.

Bryant (8-9-1, 3-0 NEC) responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead.  Mount starter Alain Girman walked lead-off hitter Adam Claire.  Vincent Molesky came on in relief of Girman, and allowed a Robby Rinn base hit.  Jonathan Scott bunted the runners over, and Jonathan Anderson's RBI single evened the score.  John Mullen then broke the tie with a two-run double.

The Bulldogs added a pair of unearned runs in the fifth to round out the scoring.

Girman allowed three runs (two earned) with three strikeouts in three innings in the start.  Molesky allowed four runs (two earned) in 1.2 innings of relief.  Buddy Fields pitched a scoreless sixth for the Mountaineers.

Kevin McAvoy picked up the win for Bryant, allowing three runs (two earned) with seven strikeouts in five innings.  Trevor Lacosse closed out the game with two scoreless innings of relief.

In the second game, Bryant jumped out to a 5-0 lead en route to the victory.  The Bulldogs scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on a Kevin Brown two-run single.  Bryant added two more runs in the fourth on RBI singles from AJ Zarozny and Dan Celluci.  An unearned run in the fifth pushed the margin to five.

The Mount scored twice in the sixth to get back in the game.  Sam Nott walked with one out, and Healy followed with a bunt single.  The runners moved up on a passed ball, and Andrew Clow reached on an error, driving home Nott with the first run.  Mo Moriarty's RBI groundout made it 5-2.

Connor Graber took the loss for the Mount, allowing five runs (three earned) in 4.1 innings.  He struck out seven while allowing six hits.  Thomas Williams added 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

John Healy struck out 10 in six innings to pick up the win for Bryant.

The teams conclude the four-game series tomorrow.
