Baltimore, Md. (March 10, 2013)--Mount St. Mary's lost to UMBC, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon in the second game of a home-and-home series.  Mark Quaranta went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Mountaineers in the loss.

Mount St. Mary's (3-9) scored a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 advantage.  In the first, Nick Walker singled, moved to second on a groundout, and scored on a Sam Nott two-base hit to put the Mount ahead. 

In the second, Mo Moriarty singled, and an error on a Brandon Scott bunt put runners on first and second. Jay Knight followed with a bunt single to load the bases.  Walker's groudout to short plated Moriarty to push the Mount advantage to 2-0.

The Retrievers (2-4) grabbed the lead for good with a four-run fourth inning.  A sacrifice fly, a squeeze play, and a pair of RBI singles provided the runs for UMBC in the inning.

After UMBC added a run in the sixth, the Mount cut the deficit to 5-3 with a run in the top of the eighth inning.  Quaranta and Tom Healy each singled, and after a wild pitch moved the runners up, Andrew Clow chased home Quaranta with an RBI single to make it a two-run game.

Mo Moriarty opened the ninth with a base hit, but UMBC was able to get the final three outs for the victory.

Quaranta went 3-for-4 with a run scored while Healy and Moriarty each went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Connor Graber started for the Mount, allowing three runs in 3.1 innings to take the loss.  Thomas Williams allowed one run in 0.2 innings of relief.  Chris Campbell allowed a run in 2.2 innings of relief while Jordan Lawson pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief in the game.

The Mount is back in action on Saturday, March 16, and Sunday, March 17, when Lehigh visits E.T. Straw Family Stadium for a three-game series.  The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday that starts at noon, and will following with the final game of the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
