Mount Loses Pair to Central Connecticut State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Emmitsburg, Md. (May 11, 2012)—Mount St. Mary's dropped both games of a Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader to Central Connecticut State on Friday afternoon at the Mount's E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus.

In the opening game, the Mount's rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh in the first game, but came up short in a 6-5 loss.  The Blue Devils rolled to a 16-1 win in game two.

In game one, trailing 6-0, the Mount's Andrew Clow and Jay Knight singled to open the bottom of the seventh to put runners on the corners.  Brandon Scott followed with an RBI single to score the Mount's first run of the game.  Michael Foster was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Nick Walker then laced a two-run double to left field to cut the deficit to 6-3.  Mark Quaranta and Josh Winter each hit a sacrifice fly to cut the CCSU lead to 6-5, but reliever Nick Boyd struck out the final batter to earn the save.

Central Connecticut (27-22, 18-13) took the lead on a Tyler McIntyre RBI single in the top of the first.  The Mount threatened in the bottom of the second, loading the bases with one out on a pair of walks and an Andrew Clow single.  CCSU starter Casey Brown, however, got out of the jam with a strikeout and a fly out.

The Blue Devils made it 2-0 in the third when Josh Ingham led off with a double, moved to third on a bunt, and scored on a sacrifice fly.  Ingham led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run while JP Sportman added an RBI single in the frame.

The Blue Devils made it a 6-0 lead on a Jake Matuszak RBI single in the sixth and a Tyler McIntrye sole home run in the seventh.

Clow finished 2-for-3 for the Mount (14-39, 7-24 NEC) with Scott going 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.  Ingham went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and two runs scored for the Blue Devils.

Brady Feigl allowed six runs while pitching a complete game for the Mount in the loss.  Casey Brown tossed six scoreless innings to pick up the win for CCSU.

In the second game, CCSU scored four times in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead.  The Mount got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when Winter doubled and then scored on a Jay Knight triple.

The Blue Devils, however, got a three-run home run in the top of the fifth to stretch the lead to 7-1 and then scored nine runs in the sixth inning to seal the win.

The teams complete the four-game series tomorrow with a 12:00 p.m. game at Straw Family Stadium.   The Mount will honor its seniors Foster, Winter, Feigl, Tom Healy, Buddy Fields, Andrew Schrock and Dan Horner prior to the game.
