MOUNT UPDATE: Mount St. Mary's split a pair of midweek games and enters the four-game series 7-19 overall and 0-8 in the Northeast Conference. Ben Smallenbroek allowed three runs (two earned) in six innings as the Mount defeated UMES 6-3 on Wednesday. Mark Quaranta leads the Mount with a .374 average and 19 runs scored. Michael Foster has a 10-game hit streak and is hitting .311 on the year. Josh Winter paced the team with 23 RBI while he is hitting .317 on the season. On the mound, Dan Horner is 1-2 with a 4.44 ERA and two saves while Karl Lamont is 1-3 with a 4.99 ERA in 30.2 innings of work.
LIU BROOKLYN UPDATE: LIU Brooklyn enters the four-game series with an 11-17 overall record and a 3-5 mark in the Northeast Conference. The Blackbirds split a four-game series with Bryant last weekend. Pete Leonello is LIU's top hitter with a .364 average, eight doubles and 15 RBI in 28 games played. Albert Faz is hitting .295 in 16 games while Brad Greve has a .293 average. On the mound, Jordan Wilcox is the top starter with a 2.05 ERA while Matt Higginbotham (2-1, 2.20 ERA) and Chris Franzese (2-3, 3.58 ERA) also are having strong seasons.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES vs. LIU BROOKLYN: LIU Brooklyn holds a 44-22 advantage in the all-time series since the Mount moved to NCAA Division I in 1989. The Blackbirds are 10-3 against the Mount over the four seasons, including a four-game sweep in Brooklyn last year. The Mount's last wins over LIU Brooklyn came in a doubleheader sweep at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on May 1, 2010.
LAST YEAR AGAINST THE BLACKBIRDS: LIU Brooklyn swept the four-game series last year in Brooklyn. LIU Brooklyn won the opening game, 5-0, before sweeping the doubleheader on Saturday (6-2, 6-5). On Sunday, LIU Brooklyn rallied from a 9-0 deficit to post an 11-9 victory. The Mount's Shane Eyler went 8-for-14 (.571) in the four-game set while Brandon Scott was 6-for-15 (.400) in the series.
CAREER NUMBERS VS. LIU BROOKLYN: Mark Quaranta is 5-for-14 (.357) at the plate in four career games played vs. LIU Brooklyn…Brandon Scott went 6-for-15 (.400) against the Blackbirds last year in four games… On the mound, Brady Feigl struck out 11 in six innings in his only appearance against the Blackbirds in 2009.
LAMONT PICKS IT UP: Left-hander Karl Lamont has a 1.69 ERA over his past two starts, striking out five while allowing 16 hits in 16.0 innings over that stretch. For the year, Lamont is 1-3 with a 4.19 ERA in eight appearances. He has started a team-high six times this year and is second on the squad with 38.2 innings pitched.
FRESHMEN ON THE MOUND: Head coach Scott Thomson has had four freshman right-handers see significant action on the mound this year. Thomas Williams is 2-1 with a 5.54 ERA in a team-high 39.0 innings. Scott Nickerson is 0-4 with an 8.31 ERA in 30.1 innings while Ben Smallenbroek is 2-2 with a 7.88 ERA in 16.0 innings of work. Redshirt freshman Chris Del Vecchio is 2-1 with an 8.50 ERA in 18.0 innings as well.
KNIGHT HAS BIG WEEKEND: Sophomore Jay Knight had a big weekend for the Mount, going 7-for-15 (.467) with two home runs, four runs scored, four RBI and four stolen bases against Wagner. The home runs were the first two of Knight's career. The sophomore outfielder is hitting .310 (18-for-58) on the season with three doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI.
QUARANTA ON THE MARK: Junior Mark Quaranta leads the Mount with a .363 average and 22 runs scored this season. Quaranta has 13 multiple-hit games this year while leading the team in slugging percentage (.504), on-base percentage (.421) and home runs (3).
WINTER DRIVING HOME THE RUNS: Josh Winter leads the Mount and the Northeast Conference with 27 RBI this season. The senior first baseman is hitting .319 with a team-high 10 doubles. He is hitting .391 with runners in scoring position and .366 with runners on base.
OWENS COMING ON: Freshman Ryan Owens is hitting .306 with six doubles and a team-high 10 RBI over the past 15 games. Owens is 15-for-49 at the plate over that stretch. For the year, he has moved his average to .260 with 15 runs scored and 15 RBI in 28 games played.
THE PAST 15: Checking the stats over the past 15 games…Nick Riley is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 18.0 innings…Karl Lamont is 0-2 with a 1.53 ERA in 17.2 innings…Mark Quaranta leads the offense with a .327 average…Ryan Owens (.306), Jay Knight (.306) and Andrew Clow (.300) all hitting .300 or better over that stretch.
