Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Hamden, Conn. (April 14, 2012)—Mount St. Mary's lost a pair of games in a Northeast Conference doubleheader at Quinnipiac on Saturday. The Mount lost 5-4 in eight innings in the second game after dropping a 7-2 decision in game one.

In the opening game, the Mount (11-27, 4-15 NEC) took an early 1-0 lead on a Moriarty RBI single in the top of the first.  Mark Quaranta walked and Josh Winter singled to put runners on first and second with two outs for Moriarty, who came through with a base hit to right field.

Quinnipiac (6-26, 5-14 NEC) answered in the bottom of the first with a Zak Palmer RBI single to even the score.  The Mount regained the lead in the top of the third when Moriarty, Ryan Owens and Sam Nott each singled with Moriarty coming home on the Nott base hit.

The Bobcats took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of unearned runs.  Palmer doubled to lead off the inning and then scored on a Mount error on a bunt.  Forrest Dwyer's RBI single later in the inning put Quinnipiac up 3-2.

A four-run bottom of the fifth broke the game open for Quinnipiac.  Scott Donaghue had a clutch two-run single to stretch the lead to 5-2.  The final two runs came on a passed ball and a sacrifice fly.

In the second game, the Mount rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game, but the Bobcats pulled out a 5-4 win in the eighth inning.

Quinnipiac scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-0 advantage.  Palmer had an RBI single to start the scoring while Donaghue cleared the bases with a three-run double.

The Mount got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth on a Moriarty base hit.  Michael Foster and Winter each singled in the inning as well.

The Mountaineers scored three times in the seventh to tie the game.  Jack Schwartz walked and Nick Walker doubled to put runners on second and third with one out.  Schwartz came home on an error by the catcher on a pickoff attempt to cut the deficit to 4-2.  Foster followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to one.  After a fly out, Quaranta doubled home Foster to tie the game.

The Bobcats scored the winning run in the eighth when Palmer doubled, Donaghue was intentionally walked, and Dwyer reached on an infield bunt hit to load the bases.  Mike Blumenthal then singled home Palmer to end the game.

The teams finish the four-game series tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. game.
