Box Score Hamden, Conn. (April 13, 2012)—Mount St. Mary's lost the first game of a four-game series at Quinnipiac, 17-3, on Friday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Baseball Field.
The Bobcats (4-26, 3-14 NEC) grabbed an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. With two outs and a runner on second base, Kyle Nisson singled up the middle to plate Jesse Ullrich for the first run of the game. Zak Palmer then singled and Nic Civale added a ground-rule double to plate Nisson for the two-run lead.
Quinnipiac took control of the game with a five-run second inning. Ullrich walked with the bases loaded ahead of RBI singles from Vincent Guglietti and Nisson. Civale added a bases-loaded walk and Scott Donaghue a sacrifice fly to round out the frame.
The Bobcats added five more runs in the fifth before the Mount (11-25, 4-13 NEC) got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. Jay Knight and Mark Quaranta had back-to-back singles ahead of a Josh Winter sacrifice fly.
Mount St. Mary's added two runs in the seventh on a Brandon Scott base hit and a Michael Foster RBI double.
Quinnipiac finished the scoring with three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
The teams continue the four-game series with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow.
