Mark Quaranta's Four RBIs Lead Mount to 9-6 Extra Inning Win at James Madison

Box Score

Harrisonburg, Va. (March 7, 2012)—Mount St. Mary's got back in the win column with a 9-6 win in 11 innings at James Madison on Wednesday afternoon.  Mark Quaranta hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning and drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th to lift the Mount to the victory.

James Madison (5-7-1) took an early 3-0 lead before the Mount rallied.  Brandon Scott belted a solo home run in the top of the third to cut the deficit to 3-1.

After the Dukes made it 4-1 in the fifth, Mount St. Mary's (2-9) then scored five times in the top of the  sixth to take a 6-4 advantage.  Ryan Owens started the rally with an RBI single to score Tom Healy, who walked to start the inning.   Scott then added an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-3 before Quaranta blasted the three-run homer with two outs to give the Mount a 6-4 lead.

The Dukes responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to even the score at 6-6.

In the 11th, Owens singled up the middle to start the inning and moved to second on a Scott sacrifice bunt.  Michael Foster singled to move Owens to third base, and Foster then stole second to put two runners in scoring position with one out.

Quaranta then reached on a fielder's choice, plating Owens with the go-ahead run.  An error on the play again put runners on second and third with one out.  After a strikeout, Josh Winter's infield single gave the Mount the much needed insurance run.  Foster also scored on the play on a James Madison error.

Scott went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to pace the offense while Quaranta finished 1-for-6 with two runs scored and a game-high four RBI.  Owens finished the day 2-for-5 with two runs scored while Foster also added a pair of hits.

Relief pitcher Dan Horner was outstanding for the Mount, tossing five scoreless innings with six strikeouts to earn the victory.  Starter Karl Lamont allowed six runs (five earned) in six innings of work in the no decision.  He struck out four.

The Mount returns to action with a doubleheader at Maryland-Eastern Shore on Tuesday, March 13.
