Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (March 27, 2012)--Mount St. Mary's lost to UMBC, 7-3, at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus on Tuesday afternoon. Michael Foster and Nick Walker each hit solo home runs in the loss.
Mount starter Chris DelVecchio rolled through the first three innings, striking out eight while allowing one hit and two walks. The Retrievers (7-12), however, broke through for a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on a Vince Corbi double.
Mount St. Mary's (6-19) got a run back in the bottom of the fourth when Foster drilled a home run to left to cut the deficit to 2-1.
UMBC's Brian Klukowicz belted a three-run homer in the top of the fifth for a 5-1 advantage. The Mount cut the UMBC lead to 5-2 in the sixth when Brandon Scott doubled and then scored on a Mark Quaranta two-base hit.
The Retrievers added single runs in the seventh and eighth to push the lead to 7-2 before Walker hit a solo home run to left in the bottom of the ninth for the final run.
Walker led the Mount offense, going 2-for-4 with his solo home run. DelVecchio allowed five runs in five innings to take the loss. He struck out nine, but walked six, in the game. Thomas Williams allowed two runs (one earned) in four innings of relief.
The Mount returns to action tomorrow at UMES at 3:00 p.m.
