Baseball Clipped by Sacred Heart in Both Games of Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Bridgeport, Conn. (March 24, 2012)—Mount St. Mary's lost both games of a doubleheader at Sacred Heart on Saturday.  The Mount lost a heartbreaker, 7-3, in 11 innings in the opener before being edged 2-0 in the second game.

In the opening game, the Mount (6-18, 0-8 NEC) rallied from a 2-1 deficit with a run in the top of the sixth to even the score.  Sam Nott doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice, and scored on Mo Moriarty's pinch-hit double.

The Mount grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth inning when Nick Walker singled with one out and then stole second base.  Walker came home when Brandon Scott reached on an error to give the Mount the one-run lead.

Sacred Heart (7-13, 6-2 NEC) tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with an unearned run.  Troy Scribner reached on an error, moved to second on a bunt, and scored on Keaton Flint's RBI single.

The Mount loaded the bases on an error and a pair of walks in the 10th, but Sacred Heart pitcher John Hermanson escaped the inning when he got Walker to ground out.

In the 11th, Hunter Phillips reached on an error and Flint followed with a bunt single.  On the next play, John Murphy reached on a fielder's choice on a bunt to load the bases for Matt Charmello, who ended the game with a grand slam homer to left field.

The Mount had seven hits in the game by seven different players.  Brady Feigl started and allowed two runs (one earned) in three innings.  Nick Riley took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) while striking out seven in seven innings of relief.

In the second game, the Mount was held to five hits in a 2-0 loss to the Pioneers.  Karl Lamont took a tough luck loss, allowing two runs while tossing a complete game.  Quaranta and Foster each had two hits in the game for the Mountaineers.

Sacred Heart scratched across single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to earn the win.  Dave Boisture had an RBI single in the fourth and Derrick Horn added a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

The Mount returns to action on Tuesday, March 27, with a 3:30 p.m. home game against UMBC at Straw Family Stadium on campus.
